Thank them for the opportunity, but let them know a better opportunity was offered to you that you cant pass up. Maybe they will offer you more money or match that offer. Remember money isnt everything you musy be happy, also compare the benefit packages and add that up to see if you really will be making more.

I think this is trickier than the other answers are making it out to be. It sounds like you accepted the first job and now you want to back out. If this is true, then you've made a commitment to the first employer ... and you're not honoring that commitment. Remember: most employers expect two weeks' notice when you're quitting a job. Not zero notice.

When you speak to the manager, I think you need to apologize. Remember: they spent time interviewing/hiring you, reading resumes, etc. Be respectful of this.

A lot of the manager's reaction will probably depend on what they hired you to do. For example, if you were hired to work in a daycare, and you don't show up ... that's a real problem! There are laws that govern staff:child ratios, and it might take them a while to replace you. On the other hand, if your job requires a couple weeks of informal on-the-job training (i.e. shadowing a current employee) before you're expected to perform, it might not be that big a deal.

I'd say, be honest. Don't do it with a note. You definitely need to speak to the manager. Be upfront, apologize, explain that you were unexpectedly offered a job that pays more, and that your financial situation requires you to accept that position.

Be prepared for a negative reaction and try to handle it with dignity.

PS Charie--What happened? I'm interested!

You should say "Thank you for hiring me, but I was also hired by another company that I applied for before applying for yours and have decided to work with them."
