I know plenty of good, benevolent people who are atheists. According to Christianity, they are going to hell when they die, does this mean hell is a bad place if there are at least some good people there?

You see, I understand that people try to do good and be good, but that wasn't what God was doing all this time. He was overcoming the problems which were started when Adam and Eve disobeyed what God said.

Now the real matter is whether or not you are 'covered' by a sacrifice for sins. The sacrifices used to be animals, grains, and a few other things. But since Jesus came on the scene, the sacrifice is Him.

With a complete lack of animosity I tell you these things. It's not about being 'good', it's about being acceptable to God. And the only way to do that is by trusting what He said, and what He did.

If I had to show people just a couple of verses from the Bible which are the most simple and potent, then I would show them these:
John 3
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18 He that believes on him is not condemned: but he that believes not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

EDIT: I went to Hell in a dream, and there is a lot of room in it! And yes, it's a bad place.

I don't believe in Hell. However, if there is a Hell, I'd imagine one would get used to it after awhile. Read Albert Camus' take on the myth of Sisyphus for an insight into this thought.

Also, how can you burn in Hell if there is no flesh to burn. Supposedly, it is only your soul that goes to Hell.

Also, there are several major religions, with thousands of sects, not to mention minor religions (in terms of number of people who practice). If there is a god and he/she/it only rewards the followers of the correct faith in the afterlife, then that means more than 2/3 of the world's population will not go to any kind of heaven. The reason I say 2/3 is that Christianity, the largest religion, comprises 1/3 of the world's population.

Let's say that Christianity is the correct religion, but only Catholics or only Protestants get into Heaven. That reduces the number quite a bit. What if it is only Quakers get into Heaven? Even fewer.

No matter what you believe, there are more people that think you are incorrect than agree with your beliefs.

Hell is a misnomer. The original use of the word is Olde English, & is the storage of potatoes in a cellar, or, underground. (It has no conotation of heating them for any purpose, or, in any way.) The word 'hell' was used in certain Bible 'translations', instead of 'grave', for the Hebrew, 'She'ol' & the Greek, 'Hades'... The Bible describes 'hell' / the grave thusly:

"The soul that is sinning--it itself will die." --Ezekiel 18:4

"You will ... return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For dust you are and to dust you will return." --Genesis 3:19

"His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground; In that day his thoughts do perish." --Psalm 146:4

"All that your hand finds to do, do with your very power, for there is no work nor devising nor knowledge nor wisdom in She′ol, the place to which you are going." --Ecclesiastes 9:10

The scripture that speaks of "the lake of fire / the second death" is speaking of the death of ALL those who have sinned against God's holy spirit --willingly & knowingly-- unforgiveable... Also the end of adamic death (due to sin). For such there will be no return to life, or, existance:

"Death and Ha′des were hurled into the lake of fire. This means the second death, the lake of fire. Furthermore, whoever was not found written in the book of life was hurled into the lake of fire." --Revelation 20:14,15

...No, I don't think that an underground cellar is a bad place...
Hell is a very mis-understood place, though!

It's impossible to know, I wonder this too, I guess I'll see what happens when I die, but till then I'll live my life one day at a time, you should do the same. Besides there are soooo many beliefs, religions, view, and yet opinions about this subject, and no one knows for sure, but I'd just take the majority of what people give you to this question and say it's right, hope this helps and good question (:

Well, duh, it's a bad place. Why else would they use the terms "hell" and "damned"?

Concerning atheists, if they openly reject God, then, yes, they will go to hell. But if they do not have an oppertunity or were raised and told things bad about religion and/or didn't know/learn any better, then they will be judged differently, under different circumstances. So pray for them and their souls.

God wants everyone to go to heaven, but He gave us free will, and, ultimately, it's their choice.

Hell will cast into the lake of fire as mentioned in the book of Revelation. Hell is a bad place but the lake of fire will be far worst.

in case you study the recent testomony (extremely Revelations), then you definately could know that devil at present does no longer stay in Hell, and that he will basically be completely forged there alongside with each and every of the non-believers whilst the worldwide ends. And remember, in accordance to the Bible, God is the Almighty Ruler, no longer devil; additionally understand that devil skill deceiver, and that he's deceiving the mortal adult males in the worldwide so as that as quickly as they bodily die, they are going to go through an eternity in Hell (go through being the main word, of direction devil could prefer to reason discomfort).

Christianity says that no man is good. No man is good. Only the Holy Trinity is good. I admit that I'm a sinner. You can't deny it even if you somehow defy life itself and keep the 10 Commandments you still are born with the sin of Adam and Eve. So are those "good" people really good or are they just another sinful product of humanity?

There are no good people in hell. Hell is where the unholy and wicked go.

So from what I herd from the Bible, I don't think burning for all eternity sounds very fun to me.....
