When you are connecting the PS3 directly to your cable internet modem do you have to reset the the modem every single time you connect to the PS3 or back to your computer. Because that is the only way it is working properly for me and that is pretty annoying to have to turn the modem off and restart my PS3 or restart my computer every time just so the PS3 or computer will find the IP address.

This is, because the Modem will only send a DHCP answer once a device is found after powerup.

The only way around this issue would be by buying a (WLAN-)Router.

You connect the router to the modem, and it will get an IP adress.
As soon as you connect another device to the router, the router will send out an adress for the new device, since routers are made to detect multiple devices anytime, and modems will detect only one device once everytime they start.

Get yourself a router, as people above told you. I'll just add to it, that the router has to be with VPN support (just in case you'll use or already using it). Wired'll cost you around 35$, Wi-fi - don't know, I don't like wi-fi anyway for it's slow and unstable working.

get a router. it is so much better and easier. i have the linksys wireless router. but i connect my ps3 with the ethernet cord because wired are faster than wireless. the linksys router has 4 ports so you can connect the ps3 and computer to the router.
