the best medicine for this problem would be prescribed by your medical doctor. Only your medical doctor can evaluate your problem and tell you what medicine would work best for you.
Over the counter medicines that work well are Advil liquid capsules, taken four times daily. Massage an analgesic cream into the knee several times a day.

My doctor has prescribed naproxen which is prescription strength aleve. This medicine is mostly an anti inflammatory.
I also have Percocet which is a narcotic muscle relaxer so please be careful with this one.
Ben gay patches also work wonders.
Also try alternating hot and cold. Start with an ice pack wrapped in a towel and then about an hour later take a long soak in a hot tub.

Glucosamine Chondroitin. You can get it at any health store or pharmacy. Believe me it does work as a long term solution. If your knees are really bothering you, you should be taking Motrin or Naposyn (something in the NSAID family).
