I think you have to pay into the system if you are a permanent resident alien. If you are here legally, not a citizen and never worked, I would guess not. Look at it this way, disability benefits are for people who can't work due to disabilities. Welfare is for people who don't want to work.

They have to be citizens before claiming benefits that belong to citizens only.
To qualify for disability, you have to hav 40 quarters or 10 years of active work before you are eligible to file for them IF YOU ARE A CITIZEN. Otherwise, no way will they get or be entitled to any kind of benefits.
Why not just go back to their country and get the medical benefits from there? How dare they think they can come here and get the same benefits that the citizens have worked for all their lives?

Yes you do have to be a citizen to claim those benefits. I cannot believe you even tried to tap into that system for non-citizens. That is incredibly low and disgusting...and now you question it as if your being told wrong that you can't have something you are not even entitled to....UNREAL!!!!!!!!!! I'll be sure to send my congressmen and senators even more emails now. This is incredibly disturbing that any non-citizen would receive money or think that they even should receive money that is there because AMERICANS put it there when a majority of America is concerned about whether or not the funds they've paid all of their lives will be there for them.

uh yea. Social Security is not something Americans pay for so everyone that wants a check, citizen or not, can get it. We don't pay our taxes so people who aren't even citizens can get the benefits.
My generation of Americans won't even get a check when we retire, because so much of the social security money is being spent on other things, so why should give even more away to people who aren't even Americans?
These guys weren't lying to you.

Dark_Panic, honey, consider this: My parents are now in their seventies, have paid Social Security all their lives and are only JUST NOW qualified to receive benefits.
I assume -Yuki- above is from Japan, surrounded by ocean, well protected from any foreign influx of illegals and astute as to its day-to-day risk factor from such potential threats to its future. If we could only be afforded such luxurious protections, then perhaps we'd be less defensive when faced with situations like yours.
No nation, no home, no person can honestly live without fear when all protections from outside threat are obliterated. Especially by the very powers installed to protect them.

Legal residents who have worked in the United States for at least a few years can get SS benefits. My mom has a green card and she's on disability.

Excuse me. American workers pay into the Social Security system for their entire working life. Therefore, when an American worker has a disability they are eligible to apply for Disability benefits .... BECAUSE THEY PAID INTO THE SYSTEM.
Now, you are saying you are in this country without having paid into the system and you think the big hearted American citizens should just give you and your family social security benefits? Why don't you return to the country of origin and ask them to support you. I mean, those taxpayers should take care of their own citizens. Right?

No; anyone can apply, but they have to be citizens, and they had to have paid into social security to receive benefits.

I was sorry both your parents are disabled, but as a tax payer why should we have to support your parents. Maybe they need to return to the country of origin and let them support them. It is very strange that both your parents are disabled. If they have to wait 7 years, how long have them been here
