I'm doing something else 4 a science class, and i cant figure out these Q's:o(?

1.What are thick, storage stems that grow just below the surface and can produce new plants?
2.What are many layers of lower leaves that stay below the ground to insulate and nourish the plant?

Im in sixth grade so dont listen to me, im just answering cuz i know how desperate you feel... been there, done that....Anyways, i think maybe possibly, roots for the first one but i have no idea!!!!
