The minimum wage in Australia is $13.74 an hour. Depending on what type of job you find, you may be paid more than that.

If you are on an international student visa, there is no upper limit on what you are allowed to be paid per hour, but there is a limit to how many hours per week you are allowed to work. If you work too many hours, the government starts to think you have come to Australia to work rather than to study.

You can't get a job if you're just an exchange student. You don't need to ship bedding over, because you can buy it cheaply here, or borrow it from your college or uni. It's likely bedding will be procvided if you're living in at uni / college. First semester in Australia begins in early Feb or late Jan. You would need more money than that to survive on in Australia. You won't need to bring piles of clothes really. We normally would pay $300-$450 weekly rent for a flat or very cheap house here. For example, a standard adult train fare in Sydney would be about $6-$8, depending on where you live. Sydney is a terrifically expensive place. No way you can survive on $13 a day! $50 a DAY for a food allowance would be more realistic, and that's what Australian businesses allow their workers per diem for a food allowance, if they're living out of town. You will be allowed to bring around 20-23 kilos of luggage as checked in baggage on the plane, and about 7 kilos carry-on baggage (in the overhead locker). I travel a lot, and that's more than adquate for 2-3 months worth of clothing. You can buy toiletries etc cheaply when you get here. Spending money is harder for me to comment on. I'm not a young person, and so I don't know what they normally spend if they go to a night club or out for drinks. I know that a cocktail can cost around $13-16. Uni students here these days seem pretty well-off to me. If you're found working while on a student visa you might be deported. You must make sure that you have the right sort of visa. There are some visas that will allow you to work for a few hours a week. Our minimum wage is probably nearer to $17 an hour at most places these days.

You need to be more specific about your skills or the kind of work you are looking for....

The current minimum wage (to the best of my knowledge) is $13.74 au per hour.

Here is a site which provides information on the minimum wage in Australia and your rights and responsibilities as an employee...
https://www.workchoices.gov.au/NR/rdonlyres/1082770B-7877-4AFF-B2C0-89AF8711CBE8/0/ApplicableFederalMinimumWage.pdf

From my understanding you must seek a visa and then begin your study, then you are eligible to apply for a work visa. If you are successful in obtaining a working visa you are able to work a maximum of 20 hours per week.

Here is the Australian Immigration site...
http://www.immi.gov.au/students/index.htm

And here is a site which discusses working on a student visa...

Hope this helps,

Great answer above.

For more resources go to http://www.wageline.qld.gov.au/ (using qld as an example) otherwise search for Department of Employment and Industrial Relations in your state.

The website lets you know what you should be getting, a pay rate calculator etc.... and your work rights.
