my prescription is 1.25+ and 1.5+.. but causes me alot of eye strain .. I've been retested with the same prescription result .. so I've bought over the counter 3.00+ glasses from my bookshop and they are just fantastic ... no eye strain even after reading for hours .. so my $300 glasses from my optician are useless .. and the $10 !!! specs from my bookshop are giving me sight that I've NEVER had before !! .. but I am a bit worried about any long term effects using the stronger glasses. ( I'am 41 years old)

u mite experience long term effects (but who doesn't)
my advice would be use the over the counter glasses but not excessively eg. if you're not doing anything take them off and just close your eyes to rest them
another suggestion could be getting a slightly lower glasses and using them for everyday jobs so you wont get any eye strain

No. Reading glasses *are* meant just for reading - they're basically like a magnifying glass, and their optical center is lower than normal glasses to work best when someone is looking down to read. So they aren't great for anything else and shouldn't be worn for non-reading purposes on a regular basis. But 6 hours is definitely not going to do any permanent damage. At worse, they may make you dizzy or give you a headache (but that should clear up once you take them off). Your best bet would be to pop out the lenses. Particularly if your costume is for a play - the audience won't be able to tell. But if you really don't want to do that, just get the lowest strength reading glasses (+1) and take them off if they start to bother you.

I've used these types of glasses for years, and have had no ill effects. I've got the expensive eye doctor ones as well and use them sometimes. I find that I'm not the only person that does this. The best part is that I usually don't have to pay more than two bucks for them.

If you are having problems reading after getting your glasses, I would go back to the Doctor and insist that he recheck you eyes. Show him your store bought ones and ask him to explain why you can see with these and not the ones that cost all that money. You might want to get a second opinion and just go have your eyes tested some where else, and see what they come up with.
