My friend just got a new cat from the Humane Society and they say that she had a flea/tick/everything treatment @ the Humane Society, but when they got home we were brushing the cat and found small black things in her fur (plus some dander). What are the black things?? Fleas?? Or just normal for a black furred cat??

I will tell you exactly what it is. After a flea eats(blood) it has to poop. Those black specks are dried blood or flea poops. Gross huh? Use a bowl of warm soapy water and a flea comb ( you can find the comb at any pet supply store and they are like a buck) and clean every inch of the kitty and dry him very well. If the fleas are gone so should their poopies. So in a couple days if they are back, kitty needs to be treated for fleas again.

If it looked like black grains of sand or salt, it's flea dirt (poop). If it looked like a tiny insect, it's a flea.

If she was treated for fleas, it sometimes takes a few days for all the fleas to die (up to 3 or 4 days sometimes but they won't be moving fast after the second day). The flea dirt won't hurt anything.

The dandruff is normal, most cats have it on their backs or near the tail. A little oil (1/4 tsp twice a week) on the food will help the skin stop producing dandruff.

It sounds like flea dirt, I would keep checking the kitty to make sure that he doesn't get fleas in the near future. If he will allow it you can wash him in a mild dish detergent, lemon dawn is recommended, to get rid of any remaining fleas and flea dirt.
Your friend did a great thing by adopting from the Human Society...thank her for me!

Hi, comb your cat with a cat flea comb this will then trap it if it is a flea. The best flea treatment is Frontline.Since I have used this on my kitten for 3 months he has not had a single flea on him,and I comb him every day with a flea comb to check. If you take a look on the Frontline website it will tell you all about it,it's a great product.

Fleas most likely. Sometimes treatments don't always work. Take it to the vet and tell them when it was given the treatment so they know when to tell you to apply a new one.

Good luck!

this could be almost anything.take her to the vet first.my sister's friend's cat had black things on her forehead and it turned out that she was sick.
i also suggest trying to wash her after a month or so.see if it goes away.the dander will go away at least.

Could be scabs, could be flea excrement. Watch for fleas.
