This girl asks a simple question about Christian movies to buy for her father for his birthday. Some of us seem to think that insulting her or telling her that Blazing Saddles is a great Christian movie is the way to respond...
I understand that we may not agree with them, and I understand wanting to be funny/sarcastic - but can we just sometimes NOT be as*holes about it?? In other words, if you dont have anything nice to say, dont say anything at all (surely, this would be nice if we all lived by this, but lets at least try to lead by example, okay?) Its not like her question was attacking us, so why attack her?? (Im all for sarcasm when we are being attacked - heck, Im the first to use it!)

Michael, Id like to personally apologize for those thousands of years of persecution you've endured at the hands of Christians.... Come on man...

Holyspirt (the irony of the mispelled name...) I agree I can come off as an as* as well - but I usually only do so when attacked by others. Im saying that this was a kid asking an innocent question, and she deserves to be treated better than she was...

Not all of us are mature enough to be respectful of others. Knowing the right answer to one question does not make anyone right in all things. I personally leave questions like that alone unless I have something positive to add. If I had seen the question earlier, I probably would have recommended "The Nativity Story" or "One Night with the King" or something along those lines, but I wouldn't insult her by recommending "Dogma" or something else that doesn't suit her personal needs. The difference of opinion on the validity of the religion has nothing to do with the question, so recommending a good movie is not a problem for me. Some people just aren't mature enough to know or respect the difference.

Fo-shizzle So-crates! Well said!
This is yet another example of me being wowed by something you have written here. Keep it up.
One way I can justify being Atheist to friends who don't understand and ask me questions, is to explain that, as a atheist, I can't ask for forgiveness. To me, that means I am accountable for my actions here and now and to the people around me. I'm not a nice person because I feel I'm being watched all the time; I do it for me and those I care about. And I give what I want in return.
BTW, is there a record for "most answers to a Q"? This has to be in the running!!

As an a Chistian who has many atheist friends and who can see many different points I not only agree but would ask Christians and other religions to be kinder to the atheists and wiccans on here as well. I have many atheist and wiccan friends and they are highly respectful of my religious opinions and we have even had pleasent conversations on our beliefs. There is no rason to attack just because you believe differently. Let's get along on here better people and respect each other as human beings a little better. I just wanted to add that I personally see Dogma as one of the most faith affirming movies ever, most Christians hate it but have never even seen it.

Yeah, it's that way.... I'm a Christian, but ya know what? There are some Christians who are jerks too. It comes down to a "Manners" thing, and howabout a little courtesy tossed in there too... kinda like tater salad... lol. I think for alot of people, this internet stuff is the way to flame others with anonymity (sp?). Life's too short, and we'll all know the real answer when we're dead. So until then, have a good time.

I somewhat have in basic terms began seeing persons use the term "Wiccanism" on the internet in the final 12 months, consisting of a few declare-to-be Wiccans. I agree that it is not the right term. i've got in no way heard/considered it utilized in any of my communities, or pagan gatherings, or any genuine-existence Wiccan activities. "Wicca" is in my Merriam Webster dictionary and is attributed to possibly being derived from an previous English be conscious. "Wiccanism" isn't got here across in the Merriam Webster dictionary - the two the single I somewhat have on my table or the web version. yet then, that answerer that used "Wiccanism" to point Wicca, is likewise asserting that Wicca isn't a faith, so evaluate the source. hehe - Blue Chaos's answer made me LOL :)

Michael I doubt you are 15, much less thousands of years old.
and you know what. I have more reason to complain then any athiest. The christians destroyed my religion and tortured the men who stood up and told them if they wanted to start a holy war they could get bent.
My religion is in tatters. Pieces are missing, interpretations run on each other. Lots of stuff is incomplete.
I had a phase of "hating the evil christians" to, But there is no one alive persecuting you. If there is someone this person is a minority. The closest you have is the D**B A$$es on street corners screaming about how they have been saved.
Persecution is public. Persecution is burning books, and murdering innocent people. Its stonings. Its torture. Its a lot of things that are not happening.
as our friend webster puts it....
Persecute-to harass or punish in a manner designed to injure, grieve, or afflict; specifically : to cause to suffer because of belief.
and harass
to annoy persistently (2): to create an unpleasant or hostile situation for especially by uninvited and unwelcome verbal or physical conduct
2: to worry and impede by repeated raids
No one is persistently following you and causing you personal harm or grief.
You are not being persecuted.
To Socrates. you are very comfortable in Athiesm. (hope I spelled it right) It fits you. A lot of athiests are not comfortable. Just like a lot of christians are not comfortable.
Instead of fixing the problem they ignore it. Admitting that they do not feel comfortable in it means that they could be very mistaken. so they are stuck practicing beliefs they do not neciserially agree with or fully support. The only means of having that feeling of rightness and that feeling of being spiritually touched (Athiests I know say it feels right and liberating....which is what I felt when I became Asatru) is to be able to fully support and get behind your faith. (not everything but you have to be fit for it.) If you arnt comfortable you dont get that.
The ones who are not comfortable get a fake truth. (I am calling it truth becuse we individually feel that our way is the correct path or is true for the most part.) It starts with a thought. "I am better becuse..... *I am something*" Could be christian, could be Athiest, could be Asatru. Could be anything.
That makes them feel good. To tell themselves they are right.
They start branching out with these thoughts. and eventually they say it. In some form or fashion it is expressed. and that gives them the same feeling. That doubt, that incompetence eats up that feeling. So they want more. So they say more things. and more things. and eventually they are attacking people. Then innocent people.
Even those of us who are secure in our beliefs do it sometimes. We try not to, but we do.
In short people who are consistent A$$HOles tend to be insecure and cant even suffer a difference of opinion. These Athiests are no better then the Christians are supposedly being "persecuted" by. They are just as domineering, just as intolerant, just as hateful and spiteful. It goes the same for christians. It goes double for Mid-eastern Muslims.
Glad to say Asatru is against people telling other people off becuse of a difference in faith. Which is why Folkist groups kick Universalist BOO-TAY.
A folkist religion is open ended. It likes science, it likes other culture, it likes lots of things. A universalist religion is closed. ONLY believing in Jesus gets you to heaven. Only this. Only that.

That is why I have you, Darth Cheney, Fu Quan, and a couple other Atheists on my contacts.... You are friggin awesome!
I may not always agree with you guys, but I enjoy people who stand their ground, and are strong in their beliefs, views and opinions, but can do it without insulting others.
There should be more people like you on R&S! I wish I could give you the thumbs up and 10 points, but the least I can do is give you a star!

Did you catch the nicety bug from Bettierage? You are acting kind of weird. Do you actually know the questioner and answerers?
1st, why do you assume the questioner is a YOUNG child? The question is simple but well written : "gift ideas?"
2nd, why do you assume the silly/rude answers are from Atheists? Sure the Zeitgeist obviously is, but the others might not be.
3rd, the answers were not THAT rude. My conservative Christian family loves both Blazing Saddles. It may not fit the request but it is not overtly rude.
It is not like someone suggested The Order http://imdb.com/title/tt0304711/ (loosely based on one of the Catholic religion's uglier secrets) or Queen Margo http://imdb.com/title/tt0110963/ (a wonderful movie made from a Dumas book based on the true story, but which opens with Catholics murdering 100's of Protestants who came for a wedding reception).
I can think of some even WORSE suggestions.

I agree with you. Sometimes people are just asking earnest questions looking for honest answers, not baiting or picking a fight. Since those questioners are much fewer in number than the Christians who just want to bicker, I think sometimes sarcasm is a knee-jerk reaction.
Also, thanks for posting the link, because I had a movie to recommend. :)
