Go to a web site like theknot.com or weddingchannel.com. They have "Planning Lists" that give you an idea what to do and when to do it by. They also have tons pictures and articles that will give you ideas on what you like and don't like. The best advice I can give you, is do what you and your finance want. Don't let anyone tell you what your wedding should be. Mostly, have fun.

The first thing you need to do is figure out your budget. From there you will see if it will be worth it to hire a wedding planner. If you are looking to hire a coordinator to help you form start to finish the consultation is usually fre, but the total cost will be 10-15% of your budget. Some wedding planners offer packages and hourly rates, these vary depending on where you are located. A percentage is due when you sign the contract, the rest is due usually 5 days before the event.
Once you have figure your budget, you want to look for your ceremony and reception site and have an estimate # of guests. Finding out the available dates will help you pick the exact date for your wedding. Make sure to book at least 1 year in advance, or ASAP. Then you can book your other vendors.
Some consultants also have hourly rates if you just need some help every now and then. Some may also offer packages for the wedding day only.
Good luck!

You can contact local wedding planners in your area and ask them for a price quote. Try visiting some of their websites. They will often list what services they provide but not the prices associated with them so you will have to call them for that information. You can look at my website to get an idea of services that a wedding planner provides. www.Whimsical-Weddings.com
When you contact a wedding planner they will need to know the following:
1. Your wedding date
2. Your approximate guest count
3. Your budget
4. The style or vision of what kind of wedding you want (the formality, colors, size of wedding party, time of day, etc.)
5. An idea of what kind of help you are wanting. Do you want help planning the whole wedding or just on the wedding day?
As far as financing, it depends on your coordinator. Some wedding planners offer the service of paying in increments (My company does) or others have a percentage you pay at the initial deposit and the remaining balance due a few weeks before your wedding date. Often, wedding planners do not offer the option to pay with a credit card but take a personal check or cash.

You could get a wedding planner.. THey normally charge 10-15% of the total budget of the wedding... If you don't want to do that.. and have the time and energy, do it yourself. You could go to any of the main wedding sites and they have checklists and countdowns on what you need to do and how far in advance you need to do things. Cash is always nice, but not always an option for some. First things first, establish a budget. Then you know what you want to spend/can spend. Then most vendors (or the people you need... florist, cake decorator, catering, wedding clothes shops, etc) accept credit cards... I think some banks even give loans... but the best idea is if you can afford to don't put it on credit... and if you take your time and buy things slowly.. you can save money. Check for sales, and clearance things.. Good luck!

I would go to the local book store and purchase a wedding planner book. It would be alot cheaper than a wedding planner. Then I would check out local bridal shows in your area and see if it something that you would feel confident in doing.
I myself did not have a wedding planner because to me it was going to be the biggest day of my life and I didn't want someone elses vision for me. I wanted my own and that is what I got. I have friends who have had wedding planners and told them exactly what they wanted and that is not what they got.

I highly recommend the "everything wedding" planning book. I got it for under $20 at Barnes and Noble. It is a good starting point to start thinking about what you need for a wedding and how to budget for one. It also has lists to tell you what you should be doing... First I say find out your budget and look for a place to have it--that kinda helped set my budget for everything else. Congratulations! Good Luck and have fun planning!
