The belief in things unseen. A friend once described it as a drowning man offered a rope, who then accepts it without demanding to know from where it came.

It is not so easy to answer as many people have many different interpretations to the word. Let me try at least.
Faith to me as Ja Boi has stated, is 'Trust'. As well as 'Belief' and 'Understanding'. Logic (as limited as it is) leads to some conclusions. It may not be correct or may be partially correct. What we cannot understand with our limited minds we have to rely on 'Belief' to lead us the way. I also said 'Understanding' because it is also a form of 'Belief' since our 'Understanding' comes from what we hear, see or what we gather with our other senses. Something we have to 'Trust' in order to make some sense from this external world.
SO in conclusion, 'Faith' is what we cannot perceive with our logic.
I hope I did justice to your Q.
Thank you for asking and having a seeking mind

"Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence in things unseen." Hebrews11:1 I don't often remember scripture, but this I do. I wonder what it means Kabalisticaly.
Surface wise I understand it to mean that faith is a tangible thing...born of hope. The proof for it being found in emotions and consciousness.

It can have a few different meanings, which makes multiple use of the word misleading at times. For example, "Faith in my friends" (trust, confidence), "Faith in myself" (personal determination and optimism), "What is your faith?" (general term for a philosophy or religion), and "Faith in God" (belief based on personal, subjective experiences) all mean different things.

It means a guess. Faith is about believing in things without evidence, specifically but not limited to the supernatural. There are over 3,000 belief systems and no evidence for any of them. Hence, to believe in one of these on faith is essentially a guess related to culture.

Faith is defined in Hebrews 11: 1, but it is in everyday language: believing and acting upon what God said in the Bible over and above what your senses tell you or what the seeming evidence is!! God can't lie and all He tells us is THE TRUTH..., circumstances are factual but temporary and WILL change. If you apply faith, they will change for the better. IF NOT, then, O well...,
Believe means NO MATTER WHAT!!

Faith is both a gift of God and a human act by which the believer gives personal adherence to God who invites his response, and freely assents to the whole truth that God has revealed. It is this revelation of God which the Church proposes for our belief, and which we profess in the Creed, celebrate in the sacraments, live by right conduct that fulfills the twofold commandment of charity (as specified in the ten commandments), and respond to in our prayer of faith. Faith is both a theological virtue given by God as grace, and an obligation which flows from the first commandment of God.
