I used to give mine (his name was Squawk...!) a very hard large guava (tropical fruit!)...you know, the green kind with a pinkish centre with seeds, every morning.
He'd spend the entire day nibbling at it...
It had to be hard as it helped keep his beak nice & sharp...
Wish i could send you some...!
xx

Your bird should be fed in the morning and then at night, about 1-2 hours before lights out. If you want to leave some food in the cage when you are not home, choose fresh and (important) uncooked veggies. You can sprinkle a fresh, chooped veggie mix with Cinnamon. Cinnamon tastes great and it retards various types of e.coli.
As for seed - not all seed is bad, but an all seed diet is not good for your bird. Most seed mixes are high in fat and low in many nutrients. On the slip side, pellets (as stated by my avian-certified vet) contribute to obesity and other health problems. I am not saying do not feed pellets at all, just remember balance and moderation. Pellets are easily consumed and pack lots of calories, minerals and such -- sometimes too much. All of a pellet is edible, whereas most parrots hull their seeds.
As for diet, it really does depend on the species of parrot you have. Some birds, such as Budgies and Cockatiels, are prone to obesity. Cockatiels are prone to fatty liver disease. In fact, I have a Cockatiel with the liver that is way, way too large. My vet put her on a 100% veggie diet for two weeks. Still, the prognosis is not good.
The more natural a diet you can feed your bird the better. Try sprouting legumes or seeds. Offer chopped broccoli, yellow squash, even zuchinni. How about a nice, fresh and crisp leaf of kale. They love those things. Brown lentils and rice.

I feed my parrots 3 times a day. In the morning before I go to work, they either have breakfast with me or I give them their pellets with other foods they like (for example: cereals like cheerios, pieces of fruits (only as much as they can eat) and some veggies)
My wife comes home from school around 3 so they will get to eat again and then later at around 6pm for dinner. They don't get much seeds because its not really good for them to have a lot. They will get fat from it and will only eat that and disregard the rest. I only give them seeds as treats. Hope this helps!

you should feed your bird two times a day, a small amount in the morning and a small amount at night. Feed it pallets and not seed, seed is bad for your bird and will cause him to gain wight. Do not feed they bird all day long it will waste to much food.
