I am traveling with my dog and already have all of the required paper work. However, the vet recommend that I have my shiz shu 5mg of valium, I am very hesistant but I do not want my dog to be too nervous since he can not ride in the cabin and has to go with the lugage. Has anyone travel with their pet and given them medication what should i expect.

Is your puppy not a small dog? If so, why can he not ride in the cabin with you?
When I moved across country to Vegas, I gave my little Pomeranian a half of a mild tranquilizer from the vet and with in 30 minutes she urinated all over her self. I would never do it again. It took her forever to get over it and become herself again. I gave my cat the same thing and she was fine. All animals are different and I think it depends alot on their size too. Good luck!!

My two dogs took a 14 hour plane ride. The vet gave them sedatives and said it wouldn't knock them out but would make them feel sleepy and not care about the ride. They are big dogs over 50 pounds. They arrived in good condition and happy. We gave them the sedative when the airport people closed them up in their crate and took them. It takes 30 minutes to take effect.
I don't know about a little dog but you can probably trust your vet. I think it would be more stressful without the sedative.

This drug will help your pet relax. Just make sure you get the dosage right so you do not over medicate.

some airlines do not like dogs to be sedated -- however if your vet recommends it, then do it, happy travels!
