Neither feasible nor safe. Over the last decade Israel made unilateral withdrawals from Southern Lebanon and Gaza, and both of them blew up in our face, as in each case the militant groups simply took up the opportunity to renew their attacks. Not even the keenest peaceseeking Israeli (like me) would be dumb enough to suggest trying again with the West Bank.

Besides, the West Bank is a far far more complex issue than either Southern Lebanon or Gaza, because it comprises the ancient lands of Judea and Samaria which bear huge cultural and religious significance to Judaism - for example the second holiest site in Judaism is the Tomb of the Patriarchs where Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and their repective wives were buried, in Hebron deep inside the West Bank. There is also a very large number of Jewish settlers who live in the West Bank (far more than the few who lived in Gaza), all of whom would need to be rehoused under any withdrawal.

The only way Israel can withdraw from the West Bank would be as part of a comprehensive peace agreement which will resolve all the issues and disarm all of the militant groups. Israeli hawks and doves disagree as to whether such a thing might ever happen, but the whole political spectrum agrees that unilateral withdrawal from the West Bank would be crazy.

Absolutely not. There are still operational terror cells in the West Bank, and the only reason there is relative quiet is because of Israeli activity. The last statistic I saw still showed Hamas's popularity at 42% (to Abbas's 49%), so I can't believe peace will reign in Israel's absence. Further, those 'evacuated' from Gaza have yet to be resettled, and the trauma and stress of that removal has led to a spike in divorces as well as social and learning issues for the children. How can we evacuate more when they are still in flux? Lastly, even if we would evacuate, to which line would we go? There is no objective border to return to, and pulling all the way back to either the green line or the security fence for nothing would certainly not receive public (or parliamentary) approval. The Israeli public has learned that unilateral withdrawal is a failed policy, and nothing has occured to change that position.

under certain conditions it could be feasible, but nobody knows how safe it could be.
it could also create a pressure cooker that would lead to the deterioration of the situation. but some people say it's got to get worse before it gets better... it's true of healing bodies, i dont know if it's true of healing nations.

Do any of you ever wonder why groups like Hamas and Hesbollah are so popular? Could it be because of the occupation? oh well how about that!
