There is nothing 'free' about salvation.

In order to receive it you must suspend reason for faith, and then be willing to praise a deity for eternity while he tortures your friends, neighbors and family members because they chose not to accept the 'free' gift.

It is ridiculous.

I am sure a lot of people will say to support the clergy and their families. But you should know that the clergy in the LDS church are NOT paid. All of the duties are divided into different positions or quorums. Each member of the congregation is 'called' by the bishop to work in a certain calling for a short time. Usually 2 years. It could be a Sunday school teacher, nursery assistant, scout master, etc. The bishop usually serves for a period of 5 years. He is then 'released' by another clergy member above him and a new man is called. Not even our prophet, Gordon B. Hinckley is paid. Pretty cool if you ask me.

FYI is have served as: area (stake)missionary, nursery assist 3 times, young women's secretary, cub scout leader, primary secretary, primary teacher 2 times, scout committee chair, and currently, life to eagle rep.

Hello HEAVENly EYES.
You would have all members of the Clergy living in the desert wearing moldy animal pelts and eating locusts? This is the 21 Century and people, even Clergy have needs. Catholic Priests get a very small stipend (salary), not enough to survive on were it not for the Rectory etc. Income for Clergy with other religions most likely varies quite a bit.
As for the collection plate, what would you think pays the Churches bills and upkeep not to mention all the charitable work and materials given daily to those in need.

Regards,

Lenny.

Clergy have to eat, buy clothes rent an apartment, and some support a family. It is the most underpaid profession in the world. In some denominations free housing is provided. In some denominations the collection plate goes directly into the clergy's pockets, but in most, the collection plate money belongs to his church and he is paid a small salary. Trustees control all the money. Clergy that belong to a religious order, get an allowance for expenses, but all the money they take in belongs the the organization. They take a vow of poverty. In some denominations the clergy has a full time job which supports them, and their clerical duties are part time.

Catholic diocesan Priests live off a very small salary to pay their bills. Catholic religious order members take a vow of poverty and have their bills paid by their orders. So there is no profit motive for people who become Catholic Priests or religious. When a Priest preaches, he does not charge admission - a basket for anonymous donations is passed during each Mass on Sunday (not during a week day Mass typically). The collections basket is to pay the expenses of the Parish - building, gas, electric, water, laity personnel hired to do certain jobs, landscaping.. This is my understanding..

All I have to say is that I work DAMN HARD and I cannot afford to own a Mercedes 750.

I drive a Mazda 323

BUT my next door neighbor who is a Born Again Pastor owns one. That is all he does!

Makes me want to rent out a hall, hire a rock band and read a scripture every sunday for 5 minutes!

Many Clergy are paid their salaries because they are on call 24/7 for their congregations and do not have time for another PAYING job. This pays for their rent, food, health care expenses and auto expenses as well as ALL THEIR OTHER BILLS......

I do not agree that they should live EXTRAVAGENTLY, but if they live simply, and devote ALL their time to their congregations and families I have NO arguement with their flock paying them a salary.....

Because they have bills to pay like everyone else. There was a time when pastors just received things from their congregation but that can no longer be depended upon.

Just because you work for God doesn't mean you don't want to go out to dinner or buy a new pair of shoes every now and then.

Because the clergy is a profession for which he has been trained and for many this is a full time job. Besides, the clergy man and his family have to eat too.

true ministers of God's word shouldn't receive $$ for this. Jesus didn't, why should they?

And remember, Jesus was the greatest teacher that ever lived.
