If it is a purebred dog, it should have been sold with registration papers and pedigrees for the parents. Some breeders sell with conditional contracts- for example, if they feel the dog is not show quality, they may sell it with a pet contract that says you can't get the registration papers until after you have it spayed or neutered, but the should still make pedigree available. If it is a rescue dog or found animal, it may or may not be purebred, but could not be documented without breeder records. There are DNA tests that can be done, but its really somewhat silly to spend the money as it still won't make it registerable- take your dog out to lunch instead!

If you are speaking of a dog you own you should :

a.)Bring it to a veterinarian, if you had already you would not be asking this question because they would have told you.
You should always bring a pet to the vet within 48 hours of purchase for a complete health check regardless of whether or not it came with vet checked paperwork.

b.) You should have asked the previous owner the breed of the dog. If it was a purebred and they were a reputable breeder they would have provided papers, along with AKC (American Kennel Club) Papers. Get in contact with these people and ask them.

If you do not own a dog, go to the AKC website, all breed standards and characteristics are listed there.

Good Luck, and if own this dog, take it to a vet already!!!

If it can be a Purebred, you can acquire AKC Registration Papers and a Pedigree from the responsible Breeder you purchased it from. If it can be a "clothier" dog, you then get papers from Continental Kennel membership, the united states's Pet Registry or United Kennel club and they don't imply whatever - No Legit Registry registers mixed breeds. If it is just a simple historic mutt that you simply got out in front of the grocery store, then you definitely get nothing and there aren't any tests to tell what kind of breeds the canine is constructed from.

If this is a Purebred, you will get carry of AKC Registration Papers and a Pedigree from the to blame Breeder you got it from. If this is a "fashion designer" canines, then you definately get papers from Continental Kennel club, usa's puppy Registry or United Kennel club and that they do no longer mean something - No stable Registry registers mixed breeds. If it rather is in basic terms a undeniable previous mutt that to procure out in front of the food market, then you definately get no longer something and there are not any assessments to tell what form of breeds the canines is made out of.

Purchase the dog from a breeder recommended by a breed club, otherwise you are never really sure what your are getting.
You can have papers on a dog and that dog can die or whatever and you can supply those papers with another dog of approx. same age.
I have known this to happen.

I had a Shephard/Husky cross that several owners of pure bred Shephards wanted to breed with their dogs.

For sales, show or breeding purposes, correct papers are a must, opinion is only useful if someone asks "what kind of dog is that"?

Well, talk to the person you got him/her from, they should know, if they dont, and they didnt give you papers, your on your own, the vet can determine what it may be, but he cant be for sure, I am not sure if they can look at their dna somehow and somehow genetically prove what kind of dog you have, but i dont think you would want to go thru all that....talk about lots of money!

You can try and determine what its definatly NOT, like if its big obviously its not a dauchund and those other small breeds, if it doesnt look anything like a dalmation, then you can norrow your search down alot just by those simple questions!

Take a look at the AKC dog breeds. If you have a puppy then you might not be able to tell. Adult dogs from my experience are easier to judged. Ask your vet or google your dogs breed and look a pics of others like yours, puppy or adult. Even if a dog has papers doesn't mean its pure bread. I bought a Maltese online and was worried about that but luckily to my satisfaction he looks just like all the pup pics out there. What kind of dog is it and maybe a pic would be helpful to us yahooers. Good luck!!

Well like a lot of other people already said if the dog was bred by a responsible breeder then it should be registered and papers should be provided for you. If you don't trust that the information given is real then you can call the AKC or UKC to confirm that your dog is of purebred lineage. I wouldn't go by physical traits alone. There are also DNA tests that you can have performed at your dog's veterinary clinic. They can either take a blood sample and run it or if they give you the option, you can simply have a swab of the mouth done and tested. This is a fairly new test in my area, but it involves no blood and no discomfort or pain. It's really quite neat!! Hope this helped!! :)

Can you post a pic of it?? You can get a DNA test....from what I've heard, these tests can tell if it's purebred as well as what multiple breeds it is in a mix. I would not trust a shelter because they just guess and usually they say EVERYTHING is some sort of shepherd, pit bull or lab. You might get a good idea from a vet or doing personal research on different breeds, but if you really want to know for sure...look into the DNA tests.

Do u know the dog's breed (race)
look for pictures of dogs that look like yours on google picture, compare them, & research the trait, specifics, ect.. that make them pure in their breed.

For example I have a male dog: Maltese breed (Maltese pure breeds have a natural black eyeliner around the inside of their eyes all around, they have very black noses, black lips, straight silky hair, that grows a lot (long) their nails are like humans transparent, and ofcourse they are white.
