That solely depends on you and your ability to learn what is taught to assuming you are being taught correctly. You would see changes pretty much right away within the first few months easily if taught properly.

Not all of us are equal with all skills so will you Master it that is up to you, but you will be able to rely on them if taught properly.

Best luck

Receiving your Black Belt is the first acknowledgement that you have mastered the basics, It's an art that evolves to suit you, with good teaching aswel as your own input you should see benefits straight away, once you have got your head around things like , the use of circles , returning fist ,clockwork patterns etc, things start to become second nature and very natural to execute.

As for taking care of yourself in a confrontation, that's up to you, you could have the physical skills but have you got the right mind set? but thats part of your training too!

All the best with your learning.

By American Kenpo, I assume you mean Ed Parker's Kenpo.

The man was a genius.

He developed his art to be applicable very easily and quickly.

Look for one of his senior students and you will be taught well.

To answer your question in all honesty, that all depends on how much effort you put into your training. On top of that, don't try so hard to master someone else's art, but try to master your own. The key is trying to master effective techniques and use them for your own unique expression of combat. Otherwise, you will just be a copy cat, copying fixed patterns tailored for your sensai, and his sensai, and his sensai, and so on.
