she has abcessed boobs that are huge and very painful. The vet says shes too old for anesthesia they said just to put her to sleep...but I feel as if the dog still has a few good years left in her. despite the problem, shes very playful still and happy, what i am wondering, is there possible a way the vet could maybe use sedatives instead of anesthesia to operate and remove these masses?

I would ask the vet if an alternative method of sedation is available. I had a similar situation with one of my dogs. She was 13 and had breast cancer. The vet said she probably would not survive the operation. I told him I was willing to take the chance. He performed the operation and my dog lived for another 3 years.

I definitely think your friend should take her to another vet. When dogs are old, anesthesia is more dangerous, but it's still possible. Or you could specifically request that the vet sedate the dog and just numb the area they're going to work on. I agree with you; if the dog is otherwise happy and playful, you shouldn't put her down. Another option is to risk the anesthesia if absolutely necessary- at least then if the dog dies, you tried to save her.

tell ur friend to find a vet that uses the gas form of anesthesia. my dog is 10 years old and has a heart murmur so when he needs teeth cleaning he gets gas anesthestics. he doesnt do good on the iv version. there is no way to control it. with the gas they r breathing it in and out. it keeps them asleep but it is constantly filtering in and out of their body so u take the mask off and they wake up in minutes. it really worked for my dog. he was awake in 5 minutes. thats all it takes. so go to a different vet. have her call around and see what they have. but if the dog's quality of life isnt very good then u might tell her to consider letting her go. it might be the nicest thing she can do for her.

13 years old is getting to be pretty old for a dog. I would suggest a second opinion from a different vet.

No,they can't use sedatives to do surgery. It is much more involved than you might think.Sounds like she's an un-neutered female with mammary tumors. At least get the open lesions treated while making the decision, but at 13 she probably hasn't much left to go-sorry.

Have her get a second opinion. 13 is a pretty ripe old age for a Pitbull, but it's always worth asking another opinion.

in the UK as long as a dog is well in its self and has no heart problems they will operate on them no matter what the age i would get your Friend to get a second opinion.
