Long term use can be problematic. We went through this with my dobie. He had more than his share of health woes, and when the rimadyl and cosequin weren't helping him any more, bless my vet, when he came to the house to euthanize him, he said "Well....ya hate to kill them when they try to stagger to their feet to lick your hand...let's try this...." Gave him a big dose of dex, then put him on a course of prednisolone. Object was to wean him down as low as possible. Started him out at 80 mg a day, got him down to 30 mg a day, but symptoms started back at that point. We discussed the side effects, problems, etc...and the vet put it to me this way...."We know what the end of the book's gonna be, we're just gonna try to get a few more chapters." My dog had another 6 months of reasonably good quality of life before the time to give up and let him go came. Would I do it again?? In his situation, absolutely. If the pred is the only viable option that gives your dog good quality of life, then make the most of it and enjoy the time you have left together.

it depends on the dose and on your dog. for example, my girl pap is on budesonide 1mg (steroid) for her ibd. she has been on and off (mostly on) steroids for 2 years. when she was taking prednisone she started with 1/2 of 5mg twice a day. it probably was a year later at that same dose when she started showing symptoms: pot bellied, thinning coat. we weened her off the pred and onto budesonide and she has been on that since the beginning of the year. she started with 1mg every day then went down to every other day, then every 3 days. we have since had to go back to every other day and now back to every day use. her symptoms went away at first, but now they are back. mostly with thinning coat.

how much does your dog weigh? if you are giving 5mg of prednisolone once daily, that really is not a significant amount and if your dog needs it for his spine, i would keep giving it. there might be other medications you can try, discuss with your vet. i think your dog will be ok though given his age and the low amount of steroids you are giving.

Not good for your dog to be on prednisone for very long - but he may need it at the moment for his spine.
You will have to ask your vet when you can wean him off, but it has to be done gradually, not stopped suddenly.

Talk with the vet about your dog taking the steroid.
If you want you can get another opinion on your dog.

Long-term steroids are never good. I'd be surprised if your doc gave out too many.

best to ask a vet. you are wise to be concerned about side effects.
