service is something a person does for someone else and gets paid for it.
Product retailing is selling a product in a retail store as opposed to a wholesale store.
They are actually very similar. The person who provides the service gets paid for it.
The person who sells the product at a retail outlet is paid for the item.
The difference is a service is something you do and the product retail is something you sell.

You have some good answers above. However the biggest difference between the two is the relationship the seller has with the buyer.
If you sell a product, like an automobile, all the warranty and support comes from the manufacturer. It is OK if the seller doesn't like the buyer, he may never see the buyer again.
If you sell a service, like a home or office cleaning service, the seller has a long term relation with the buyer. So more attention is paid to developing a good relationship in order to keep the customer. The seller better be happy with the relationship from the start. He will have to live with it during the life of the service agreement.
Is that a better answer?
