He has been losing big chunks of hair for a couple of weeks now does anyone have any idea what might be happening

Ok, big open wound means at the very least the dog needs an antibiotic. My dog had something like this on her paw, I searched out a cheaper vet and was lucky enough to find one, people all over wa. state come to her cause they have multiple dogs and the cost would bankrupt them other wise. So I had surgery and antibiotic and all for 300$ and that was really good cause everybody else wanted 1200$. You have to talk dog to find these good local vets. And my dogs wound was the size of a quarter.

Maybe he extracted whatever was under there himself. If it's a "big open wound", then you should take him to a vet. If it's pretty small, then he probably already did what needed to be done, just watch for infection.
