If you were to take this literally, then even the Hebrews disobeyed this.

They make the ark of the covenent with carved images of golden cherubs as well as many different carved depictions of things.

First of all to people who claim to have faith yet say the 10 commandments aren't important need I remind you of the tale of the rich man (lawyer) speaking to Jesus about the laws and God. Jesus told him Once you can follow all ten commandments and show unyielding love to your fellow man then you have followed all the laws the Lord requires. Secondly to answer the question at hand. The second commandment is about making and worshiping that which you have made. I'm an artist I don't worship my drawings. God gave me a gift and I'm going to use it weather fundies like it or not.

You conveniently left off the next line, which completes the passage and reveals its meaning ... "You shall not worship them ...". It is worship that makes something an idol. You cannot "make" an idol. You can make a statue or an icon, but that object does not become an idol unless someone worships it. Personally I never met anyone who worshipped plaster or marble.

Many are not making images. The Catholic church does make them but intelligent Catholics don't worship them.Taken to extremes like the Amish do even a picture may be considered an image.

I agree that Christians should not be making "idols" or icons, but to claim Christians were told not to is incorrect. Only Israel was told not to.

oh wow. good question. Could be that Christians are not bound by the ten commandment's (those are for the Hebrew nations). Christians are bound by a higher law, not written on tablets of stone (as those given to Moses) but written on their hearts.

Because they've conformed to worldy ways. Sometimes it's unintentional or subconscious, but it still doesn't make it right. Thankfully, God is a god of grace and mercy.
