There ARE "soft focus" filters, but many people just put a very thin film of Vaseline on a UV or other "plain" filter for a soft focus effect.
If you know what you are doing, you can blur them in Photoshop, also.

soft focus filters come in at least three steps we called them "ugly 1 , ugly 2 and ugly 3" depending on how much you want to soften the image. Using the stocking you can take a lit cig and pop a hole in it to give you a sharp center and soft edges

The old way was to use a filter, I suggest using PhotoShop and applying the "blur" effect after you have taken the picture. In that way you can control the amount of blur and try different amounts until you discover the one you want.
p.s. Don't forget to copy the image to a file of a different name and change the format to "Tiff" before you begin to work on it.

The least expensive way, and what folks have been doing for years, is to stretch pantyhose or stocking material across the front of the lens and secure with a rubber band. Sounds funny, but you have to try it. Of course, being digital you can do it in post, but why do that when you can do it for real?

Canon offered an EF Soft Focus 135mm lens. If it will mount on your camera it would give the best results.
