One of the men who work in my office building came in about an hour ago to show me his brand new Golden-Doodle puppy. When he told me that the dog was a purebred doodle that cost him $1200 plus shipping from Ontario, I suddenly spewed forth everything I know about these mutts being marketed as designer dogs, and that reputable breeders do not breed mutts....I basically told him that the breeder screwed him and that he could have adopted a homeless doodle for less money, while saving a life. I was in no way rude....how can you be rude while playing with a 12 week old ball of fur....but I was pretty matter-of-fact.
He did not react well....I think I offended him, which was completely unintentional. Is there any way I can smooth this over?

Just tell him you are sorry if you offended him. Let him know that you think his dog is really cute and animal welfare is something you feel strongly about.
People who are designer dog breeders are taking advantage of buyers who don't know better.
Maybe put together a welcome basket with toys, treats etc. for his new pup.

You could learn the facts before spewing... that would go a long way toward not having that happen again.
Also, how could it have been unintentional? He has the dog and he actually made a trip in with the dog to show it to you. It's obvious he's proud of his pup and you told him he was "screwed"
If you were to actually research golden doodles (as I did when I bought mine from a very reputable breeder) you would find that the things you told him were complete rubbish. Many reputable breeders of standard poodles have begun to cross with goldens. An F1 cross produces a pup that is very standard in appearance and temprement. Many breeders also backbreed (an F1 to a poodle) to produce a dog that sheds less.
The breeder of my dog followed every guideline they follow when breeding their standard poodles (and, more recently goldens). That is very similar to what many reputable breeders are doing. They are breeding these dogs with the same sense of purpose and care that they use with their CKC registered dogs (which of course, were nothing but well bred mutts many long years ago)

i agree with you. you can call them designer dogs all day long but they are mutts never the less. that does not make them bad dogs just highly over priced dogs. you are right the shelters are full of designer dogs that cost hardly nothing. as a animal lover and groomer for over 20 years i can tell you the dog world has gone crazy with all this designer crap. PEOPLE ANY DOG THAT IS HALF ONE BREED AND HALF ANOTHER BREED IS A MUTT....to answer your question you probley should not of point out his stupity to him but now that you have just tell him your sorry you did not mean to up set him..

How about talking to him and apologizing for your delivery? Tell him that you still think he should have acted differently, but that you were rude when you jumped down his back. I love dogs, but I don't think that getting mad and impolite is an effective way to convince anyone of anything.

You always make me smile, lol........maybe let it sit for a day or two and then send him an email or catch him in his office and apologize, saying that you didn't mean to come across rude, it's just that you're really passionate about dogs and breeding, and that didn't mean to sound offensive to him. That's all you really can do - he can say "no problem" or he can brood over it.

I'm quite sure you DID offend him ... and that's as it should be. If more people were offended by "-doodles" and "-poos" and the like, maybe people would finally wake up and realize what a bad idea this trend is. And then all the money-grubbing "so-called breeders" would have no further demand for their product.

I would just tell hjm that I didn't mean to offend him but let him know that you are very passionate about how you feel when it comes to animals. Don't apologize for what you said, you were right in your convictions.
Way to go! : )
Ohh, just read maxmom's idea of a basket...that is a great idea!!

lmao, that is great... why people will pay big money for a MIXED dog... and think it is purebred
That reminds me of the time I went to the flea market and a guy tried to sell me a PUREBRED LAB MIX was his exact words, it was a wired hair terrier/ chocolate lab... it was a cute lab with long whiskers on his face and then wanted 400 bucks for him... but a purebred lab mix....lmao

NO, not without pretending to 'takeback' some of the things you said! And you were quite right - you may have been the first to tell him these things, but you wont be the last! If you weren't rude, then you have nothing to apologise for! Good on you x

Apologize, and explain to him that you have strong feelings on the subject.
