They calculate the heating and cooling loads first, for whatever it is that needs heating or cooling, then they write the equipment specifications for all of the equipment that has to be purchased to meet the loads.
They see that all the equipment specifications are put out for equipment manufacturers to bid on furnishing it.
They check the equipment bids and tell purchasing people what to buy and from which vendor.
They calculate all the duct sizes for the heating and cooling systems and design the control systems for controlling air flow and air temperatures.
If they are not making the layout and installation drawings for all of the equipment and ductwork themselves then they check all of the drawings that are made by others.
When it comes time for the HVAC equipment to be installed in many cases they help supervise it's installation. In any case after the equipment is all installed they have to go thru rhe installation and check everything against the drawings.
After that they are responsible for starting the systems up and balancing all of the controls so that all of the hot and cold air goes where it is supposed to when it is supposed to.

Then they take a long vacation.

They do a multitude of things. They may use AutoCAD (or similar programs such as Ideas) to design air-conditoning systems for renovation projects or new buildings. They may be consultants for general contractors in determining how many tons of A/C a chiller needs for a building with X amount of square feet. It all depends on the job. You may also look at drawings to do "takeoffs" and write up a budget to estimate how much an HVAC project may cost. I graduated with a mechanical engineering degree and I'm working for a construction management company.
