Very nice, easy transportation, but not so affordable anymore (where I'm living now!) - Astoria
Very nice, moderate transporation (relies heavily on the 7 train, which doesn't run often on weekends), affordable with LARGE apartments and houses - Sunnyside
The rest of Queens is affordable, nice, and safe as well - just not as easily reached from Manhattan if you need to go there every day for work.

Rego Park is a nice neighborhood and affordable compared to other Queens neighborhoods like Bayside, Douglaston, and Little Neck.

Try the Days Inn New York City, which is located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Rooms there start at $81 a night. Good luck Native New Yorker

Affordable is going to be a relative term. anywhere in the greater New York area. Maybe try Bayside, Middle Village, Howard Beach or Astoria.

Astoria is relatively safe, my sister lived there alone as a young thirty-something, single girl :)
