She is very worried that it will be broken if put in suitcase as she has to make 3 transits to get to her final destination

Yes, no problems with that, I travel with mine 3 - 4 times a month, but, she needs to be aware this will be the only item on hand luggage allowed, she wont be allowed a handbag as well no matter how small!!, I recommend using a backpack rather than a laptop case, that way she can carry make up, purse, keys etc. Don't forget perfume etc must be in a clear plastic bag and nothing larger than 100 mls can be carried.

Yes, she will have to take it out of the bag to be screened separately from the rest of the hand luggage.

If she takes her laptop, it will be counted as her one, and only allowed piece of cabin baggage. She wont be able to carry on a anything else, I.E; handbag.
