Your licence needs C1 entitlement to drive a vehicle with a maximum weight of between 3.5 and 7.5 Tons. You get this automatically if you passed your test before a certain date,I think it's the first of January 1992. The rules on registering a vehicle as Showmans are quite strict and basically only cover fairground vehicles,I don't think they let much else through although it's worth a try as you won't need an Operator's Licence.

If you passed your Category B (car) licence before January 1st 1997, you can drive vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes. You did, so you can.

Re-registering an ex-military vehicle for road use is not usually a complicated matter. Get in touch with your Local Vehicle Licensing Agency (a branch of the D.V.L.A.) who can talk you through the procedure.
