I dont have health insurance or alot of extra money, but I am depressed and at the end of my rope... I really dont know what to do.... It feels hopeless to me but I know I need to do something. Ive thought about natural herbs but I think I need to see a doctor. Can I go to my OB that delivered my son? Or just any family practitioner?

You CAN go to your practitioner but they most likely will just refer you to a mental health counselor.
A Psychologist will talk to you and help you. A Psychiatrist will give you drugs

If your depression seems to be more pronounced during ovulation and your cycle then see your OB. Otherwise, see your family practitioner.
Talk in detail with your doctor/s. He/she will either prescribe medication for you or tests to ascertain just what health issues you may have that is causing your depression, plus your doctor will refer you to a specialist if they feel it is necessary.
Take into consideration that a regular family practitioner or OB is not going to be as knowledgeable with mental health issues as a specialist would be and may not know a lot about the different types of medications there are....but they can point you in the right direction.
So with that said, go down to your health store. There are a lot of natural products available to assist with depression and mood swings that WORK- without the nasty side effects of regular drugs. Sometimes it is a vitamin deficiency, unbalanced diet, etc.
Dr. had me on Zoloft and all I wanted to do was sleep-sleep-sleep. I was more depressed and unable to do anything being on the nasty stuff than I was before I ever got on it. Prozac did the same thing for me as Zoloft did...so I went herbal all the way and feel wonderful.
There are agencies that will help financially too so check with your doctor. Good Luck!

I'm assuming you're in the USA, where the system is different from here in the UK (here, you'd start off with your General Practitioner [GP] no matter what). I think you should ensure you see someone who understands mental health issues and your obstetrician is unlikely to be well-up in the mental health field. What are you hoping for? If it is medication (which may improve the symptoms but won't do much for the longterm, except buy you some time) then you can probably go to someone more general (though with specialisation in mental health). If you are looking to go into psychotherapy as well as or instead of medication, you will need to find a psychotherapist or someone with a psychotherapeutic training. alongside other specialisations.

Ideally.... Go to a Mental Health Professional..... Don't make the same mistake I made... by going to my General Doctor for Depression & it dragged out things until I saw an actual Psychiatrist. Good Luck and God Bless... Sister

You can go to any doctor, but keep in mind a mental health specialist specializes in depression among other mental illness, he or she would be more able to get you on the best treatment than just any doctor. Antidepressants do not work the same on everyone, what works for me may do nothing for you.

How long ago did you have your son? If it wasn't long ago, it's probably post-partum depression and your OB should be able to diagnose and treat it. If it was years ago, then you should probably just go to a family practice doctor. Hope you start to feel better soon! Hang in there!

You can go to your PCP. It might be best for you to go to a mental health doctor because they are the most experienced with the medications that are used to treat different psychiatric problems. I hope you will be feeling better.

Hi.... depression isn't fun, i know... i'm sorry you're suffering.
Yes your regular doctor can help -- let him know what you're gong through. That's what i did... he can prescribe medication if he feels you need it. Doctors are very familiar with depression these days, and treat it frequently.
You can also do a yahoo search on DEPRESSION SELF-HELP or COPING WITH DEPRESSION for advice and information.
take care ok?

Yes, you can go to a regular doctor for depression, and they can prescribe you anti-depressants if you need them.
