I really want this kitten, it's absolutely gorgeous. I don't make big purchases like this. But I am very into cats, I adore them. I even work at a shelter twice a month scooping kitty pooh and I really want my own cat. I could get one from the shelter but while they are all very sweet cats, this one is just drop dead gorgeous and could be a show cat someday. Everyone around me spends money on other items like things for their house or hobby things that are just as expensive, but I am getting the third degree for wanting a living breathing thing that my entire family will enjoy. Oh and I am gonna have to charge this on a credit card and save to pay it off before march of 08 so i dont get charged interest. again- i still dont see a problem with this.

btw- i work at a no-kill cat shelter. and i don't want this cat just for show quality- so u can just get that right out of ur head. I was basically pointing out that it's a beautiful cat that could possibly be a show cat.

after all the fuss- i have decided to buy the kitten. yes i work at a shelter and no it's not my fault that there millions of homeless kittens and cats. so i feel that it doesnt make me obligated to only adopt. i appreciate all your opinions. i am choosing my best answer now.

You go girl! You have the right to do this so don't let anyone talk you out of it.
The question is - is that a good price, and what should you know about Burmese?
I'll be right back....
Ok, I can't find much wrong with them; just make sure your kitten doesn't have the "head fault." (see wiki link for more info on that).
There's a Yahoo group you may consider joining to learn more.
The last link suggests that $300 is a starting price, so $650 may be a bit much.

Life is short and you deserve it! I know a girl who spent $400 on a small handbag! Every now and then you should buy yourself something. You have said that you never spend big and that you really want this kitten so you should get it, making yourself, your family and the kitten all very happy! Plus a kitten is a friend for many years to come, unlike the handbag which will go out of fashion in months! People cant tell you that a kitten is not worth it if it means a lot to you. I would rather soend $650 on a kitten than a dress, a bag or any other materialistic items. If you are wondering if it is over priced, well i don't think so. pure breed cats are very expensive. two years ago there was a rag doll kitten for $600 so i think the price is reasonable.

I believe that this is too much. You say you work at a shelter. Well how many cats have you seen killed because people do not want to take care of the responsibility they have committed too. How many of them are needing to be put down to make more room for others. I know you said that other people around you spend the same amount of money on nothing but why do you. The extra money could go to giving the cat you adopt better toys or different things to have it play with. Besides are you going to show the cat. and what happens if now as a kitten it looks like a show cat and then as it gets older something happens and it isn't show quality or it could have one defect like it turns it ear funny and you can't show it. then what? I wouldn't do it. And do not think that it will not go to a good home because if you can pay that much for a kitten then you can afford to give it a nice home.

the money part isn't an issue to me - although you should be able to find one thru a breeder or rescue for much less.
i guess i just don't understand why, as a shelter volunteer, you would choose to add to the overpopulation problem by buying a kitten because it's gorgeous when there are so many cats being killed every day for lack of homes. if ANYONE could understand what buying this kitten means to the animal world, it should be you. your shelter may be no-kill, yes, but that doesn't mean that all the other ones in the world are. the pet overpopulation problems extends a little beyond your shelter. you should be doing your part to help it, not add to it.
if you have to save up the money for it in the first place, you will never be able to afford the entrance fees and everything else that goes into showing. so the fact that it could be shown someday is pretty irrelevant here. and animals being shown cannot be spayed ot neutered - are you going to add to the pet population problem by breeding too?
if you don't see a problem with this, maybe you need to work more often at the shelter. this time, open your eyes to what is going on around you in the world of cats & dogs.

No matter how much you want that kitten, or any other, you are only making an animal seller a lot of money. Animals were not put here as merchandise to be used for profit. Some others on this forum agree. rescue an animal and you will love it much more than if you paid a price you can't afford. The animal will return your love, guaranteed. I compliment you on giving your time to help the animals.

If you really have your heart set on this kitten get it. why not its your money.
But if you don't want to pay that high try looking at other breeders and check their prices.
Is it $650.00 cause its got a special coat pattern?
( High quality show cats are expansive people )
MY only other advice is make sure you get one from a reputable breeder.

Of course. Cash is legal tender, a seller is required to take it. If you have bad credit, consider using some of that cash to pay down your debts, and try to make do with a cheaper car, or the one you have, or none at all (ride a bicycle or something). If you have no credit, then no worries, just be careful not to ruin it when just starting out.

Think of the shelter you work at and think what it could do with $650. The kitten might be gorgeous, but it's a bit beyond me that you volunteer at a shelter and see so many that have no home, and even think of spending some obscene amount of money on a purebred. You might be lucky enough to volunteer at a no-kill shelter, but most shelters aren't. Cats are dying every day for lack of homes. I couldn't sleep at night if I did that. The shelter I volunteered at was NOT a no-kill shelter.
Rise above the impulse to spend money on a purebred and give a needy animal a home.
