I don't think the idea of hell is meant to scare people into religious belief... I think it should be used to help people learn how to behave and not do things that are considered sinful (murder, rape, stealing, etc).

No reason.

As in no reasonable person could possibly believe in a benevolent god who would condemn anyone to an eternity of punishment for any "sins" they committed during the relatively infinitesimal time that the person lived. There is no crime which justifies eternal punishment. You could argue for a few billion years but you could never justify an eternity.

Of course a truly reasoning person wouldn't believe in god or the afterlife in the first place.

Time changes everything including the people, the beleifs, ideologies, everything! What was perceived and accepted once get changed to totally to non-acceptance level. The religions - when maintained as the center of thought, people beleived and were made to beleive on the hell and heaven as rewards for their good and bad living and at times it was based on their lifestyle too!

Now everything has changed including the concept of God and everything associated with the Church of Christians, the Masjid of Muslims and the Mandir of Hindus et al. So, we stand in a different world altogether which does not fully accept the religions in its old form! For the majority of God loving ( God is not the one to be feared about, so no God fearing!) people the concept of God is that he is the purest and noble soul taken birth as Lord Jesus Christ, Prophet Mohmmed and Lord Krishna et al.

It means by doing prayers and seeking the blessings one wants to be in peace of mind to live happily and he has the only one judgement on life which is, "to be honest in not committing anything sinful", namely, to remain harmless to one and all, in the larger interest of the society for the peace and harmony to prevail everywhere!

Here the understanding has come, to beleive that the heaven and the hell are right here on Earth only, and we can create the heaven here if we live for everything that is good to practice rather than preaching! So, the people have lost the fear of Hell, but strongly has the urge and desire to feel the heaven on Earth! So, it is now in the hands of all of us to change the global society to live in heavenly way, ridding of all the bad and keeping all the good for all, to ensure the heaven for all the people and to live happily to enjoy and share everything equally!

Believing in something, or for that matter, NOT believing in it, does not change whether or not it does exist.
So, having said that, isn't it more practical to consider something a possibility until you know for certain?
