I am a junior in college, and I value my education a lot. I really try to learn and actually take in what the teacher says, not only because I like to learn, but what the teacher says is important for tests. I find it very annoying and just plain rude when other students are talking, laughing and mumbling when the teacher is talking. It gets even more rude when the teacher has to stop every so often to remind the class not to talk when he/she is talking. This type of stuff is in the syllabus, and most of it is manners that were taught in elementary school. Why do students do this? Who else think its rude?

To Tony B, yes, you are right you are paying for it, but other people are paying to LEARN not to listen to you talk. If you thinks its okay to talk while other students are trying to learn, SKIP class. It wouldn't matter anyway because you can't hear what the teacher is saying because you are too busy talking, so either way, you fail which = wasted money, THAT YOU PAID!

It's very rude and if your professor were a good professor, they would only disrupt class once before they were asked to leave. You are paying for your college education; you have every right to be able to hear your professor!

Well, maybe the teacher should take a stronger stand and throw them out of class. Good thing you value your education though, you'll get a lot farther than the big mouths you have to try to drown out. And...just because you're paying for an education doesn't give you the right to disrupt others. It's unfortunately that we live in a society these days with people who are completely unaware of the fact that other people inhabit the earth too. Most people think the world revolves only around them anyway...

I sometimes will tell the class as a whole that, rightly or wrongly, I'm the one people are being paid to listen to (if I;m the one talking). And if it is a student contributing to discussion, I insist that everyone has the right to be heard in class in their time.
Anyone who does not think it's rude needs to ask themselves if the other students are PAYING to hear them (the rude ones) talk.
If the class is that pointless, oh rude ones, skip! You might flunk, but you don't seem to care anyway.

And Tony B., maybe the other students are not as bright as you. Or maybe they prefer to focus instead of multi-tasking. It's really not your choice to make for them, is it?

It's definitely rude and frankly plain immature. They are college students. Granted they're not 40-year old adults, but it is time for them to leave that kind of behavior outside of the classroom.

I have heard a lot of college instructors and professors talk about how they started out in grade schools and high schools, but love teaching at the university level because they don't have to deal with any discipline problems and just plain nonsense.

Your instructor shouldn't have to tell them not to talk. They should know better. How ridiculous that a college teacher would have to even include that on his / her syllabus. You're teacher needs to quit letting them get away with this type of behavior and refer those students to the Dean of Students Office. A warning or even probationary period, may straighten a few of them out and make them realize that things that we did in junior high or high school are not necessarily considered to be appropriate in college.

I hope that things get better. In the meantime, you will have to try and ignore them.

i totally agree! the second day of a class this semester this a**hole behind me talked the ENTIRE class, i'm not exaggerating. the prof talked for maybe 20 minutes then we watched a movie the rest of the class and were supposed to answer questions on a movie guide he gave us. this kid talked through the whole movie and then had the audacity to ask me if he could see my paper at the end of the movie!! i'm pretty shy i guess you could say so it's hard for me to not let people take advantage of me in situations like that but i was just thinking WHATTT? so all i said was "umm probably NOT" lol and he was like "no?" and i just said "no" and walked out hah.
but yeah i don't get why people have to talk during class...we're not in high school. you're choosing to take classes so i would assume people should care and want to pay attention. and i just feel bad for the profs too...that has to be so annoying when you're just trying to do your job.

I had a few classes like that , I found it rude. I also would say to the people that were talking I was paying for this education and not here to listen to them gossip. Told them to do it on their time, and not the classes time. You have the right to learn. Address the issue.

I'm in college right now and that does happen quite often. It doesn't distract my attention too much but I do think that it is very disrespectful to the instructor. If students don't want to be there they shouldn't attend, most instructors don't require it anyway.. and if they do, people need to either deal with it or find another instructor that doesn't require attendance.

My friends do this, im scribbling away an then someone will turn to me and shrieks "DARLING! Coffee?" and pulls out their flask, before flipping through a copy of Vogue as the lecture is going. It's getting like bad because I want to learn but I like my friends regardless of this detail!

I think it's VERY rude. (I'm not always listening to the professor in class, but I at least would like to have the option of tuning in.) When students are being loud, they usually get shut up pretty quickly (at least in my classes). The professors don't put up with it.

It is very rude. I hated it.
But I also blame the prof. for not having classroom control in putting a stop to it.
