Just had a few teeth filled (only had one previous cavity filled twenty years ago so I am not familiar with this procedure)--my teeth which were worked on are now very sensitive to cold and heat and painful.

How long does this pain last and when should I expect the pain from heat and cold to stop?

Have you told your dentist about this? There can be a couple of reasons for this to happen. If your tooth only hurts when you eat or chew, I suspect that the filing sits about the natural line of the tooth, so that when ever you eat or chew, the top tooth hits the bottom one with a lot of pressure. Most dentists will put a piece of some kind of paper on your tooth when you have a filing and have you bite down, or ask it it feels ok. Or it could possibly be that the filing is large enough that is is close to the nerve and the temperature of the food or pressure causes pressure on the nerve. In either case, the dentist should be able to take care of it.

I have had extensive dental work done over the years. I helped make two dentists very very very rich.
The answer to your question is, that it is different for every patient, which is why you will only get a true answer from your dentist.
Once or twice I had to have drilling without the help of anesthetic. Ouch.
Have 19 crowns and at least a half a dozen of them done twice.
Having good teeth requires some pain. Otherwise you need to brush your teeth a million times a day.
