I recently told a german girl i know "Schoenen Abend" at the end of the night. Does this mean good night or did I say that incorrectly. I am worried i said "have a good night" wrong and made an idiot out of myself. I thought Gute Nacht was more of something you say before bed. I know "schoenen TAG noch" means have a good day, does this apply to saying good night? was i incorrect or is it okay? i hope she also didn't think i was refering to the weather.

"Schönen Abend" is something you would wish someone who is leaving to go out that evening - like "have a nice evening".
You could have also said "schönen Abend noch" - meaning something like have a nice evening from this moment on.
"Gute Nacht" would have been OK (I'd even say the best way)in that case as you were parting from her at the end of the evening and you could assume she'll be going home (inside) to sleep.
You say of course "gute Nacht" also said to someone who is going to bed - as you mentioned it.

Nevertheless you did not make a fool of yourself because referring to the weather you would have had to say "schöner Abend..." = "nice evening.."

Not a native speaker in German but was born in Stuggart. Schoenen abend means beautiful night.

What you have said was alright, and what you have thought about "gute Nacht" was correct, too. By the way, it´s not so easy to make an idiot out of yourself if you struggle with the German language. There are so many Germans by birth, who do that every day, and everyone knows it.
