We believe the Atonement of Jesus Christ covers the sins of those who cannot account for their own actions (like little children and the severely mentally retarded).

The Atonement of Jesus Christ covers the rest of us too through Faith, repentance, baptism...

Original sin is a concept used to instill fear in believers so they can follow you blindly and hope that one day they can be washed clean when they die or are killed. This concept is flawed if you believe in Jesus, considering he washed away the sins of mankind at that point.

However, the entire concept is folly. What is sin? If it is an act that must be committed then all children are born clean and pure.

I think religious people need to stop condemning their children before they get a chance to live. Do you know how much it sucks learning to read, then your parent calls you a filthy sinner. Good job parents. Good job.

I don't know why Mormons don't believe in it, but I can tell you that Judaism has never had any such doctrine as Original Sin.

It was apparently invented by the Catholic Church fathers who gave the story in Genesis this nasty twist and came up with Original Sin, and then taught it to their followers as truth.

Judaism, traditional, Orthodox Judaism (actually ALL branches of Judaism) believes that all people are born with clean, pure souls, unblemished, and that it is what we do AFTER we are born that determines whether we blemish our souls or not.

We don't have Original Sin, never have -- and find the idea really disgusting, an insult to God, and very misinformed.

So, I'm not very familiar with Mormon doctrine, but it sounds like they are closer to Judaism on this than the rest of Christianity is.

What is original about sin? All sin is, is the trangression of the law. Anything else is to excuse it. Sin cannot be classified and neatly packed in categories. so do mormons believe is sin? I should think so. If not then that is a very, very scary and disturbing belief if they consider themselves believers of the word.

To believe in original sin is to deny the Atonement of Christ. If we believe Christ paid the price for the sins of mankind, wouldn't it make sense that men are no longer responsible for Adam and Eve's sin? If we do believe that, then we should also believe tat we inherit ALL of the sins of our ancestors.

Where then would the Atonement of Christ apply?

We believe we are punished for our OWN sins and NOT for Adam's transgression.

Adam and Eve brought sin into the world, but it's not held against us. Only our own sins. That's why we don't baptise our children until they are at least 8 years old.

We believe that Adam transgressed the law. He will be (has been) judged for his actions. Through his actions, knowledge and corruption were brought into the world. We are all fallen and natural. But we will be judged on our own actions weighted by our knowledge and understanding. Those that do not have the mental capacity to be accountable for their actions are completely covered by the Atonement of Jesus Christ. The rest of us are partially covered unconditionally and partly conditional.

Poor theology.

Death is the universal penalty for sin. It says so in the bible.

On the other hand, one without sin is not liable to die ... ever.

And since even newly conceived babies are subject to death, it proves that all humans are in some way affected by the sin of our first parents.

And Jesus' atonement hasn't eliminated death as yet, so there must be something else that still needs to be accomplished, first.

Maroni should have known all this. I wonder why Joe never figured it out?
