I saw a program the other night saying that Pitbull dogs have been banned (I know there was a problem with them a while ago as some were attacking people). What does this mean? Where have all the living Pitbulls gone (have they been killed). I feel really stressed as I love animals and believe that some of those dogs were probably fierce because of their horrid owners. Does anyone know if they still breed them?

they are only banned in certain cities. There are many places where they are still allowed. Any dog confiscared in a city where they are banned is most likely taken to the shelter and euthanized.

Its a shame, because its not the breed.. its the horrible owners. They will just find another breed to ruin.

Some city/counties have banned pitbulls (and other various breeds). Every city/county has different laws. They are not banned everywhere though.

This happened in a city I lived in a couple years ago. They way they handled the existing dogs was that all the existing pitbulls were grandfathered in. So people could keep their existing pets if they registered them with the city, but no new pitbulls are allowed in the city.

Some cities/counties probably aren't so nice and just say "all of the pitbulls (or whatever other breed they ban) need to go now". So people either have to move away, rehome their animals, or blatantly disregard the law (which I don't recommend the last option, then your dog can be confiscated and possibly put to sleep).

Many different breeds have been banned in different cities or counties across the US, including "pit bulls". Some are surrendered by their owners to the animal control or seized by AC, and put down. Some owners just go under ground.
Yes, the vast majority of cases of a dog being out of control and becoming dangerous is due either to the deliberate acts of the owner, or the owner simply being ignorant.
Yes, they are still being bred.

I too think it is so awful that the scum of the earth united to create a breed so aggressive, and encourages their aggression even further! I know that the ones who are even barely aggressive will be put down, but I am not sure about the others. They might be fostered, or rehomed. You never know what people are doing in these situations. On the average, though, they won't immediately put down a dog unless he is deemed unfit to function in society. The shelters have a seperate kennels for the new, quarantined, and unsuitable dogs that are not available for adoption, and that is where all new-comers stay until they are ready to be adopted.

in some citys and counties here in the us they have been banned, due to ignorance and people being to lazy to learn about the breed and irresponsible pet owners. (dont even get me started!)

They give the owner usually 30 days before the law takes efect to get rehome the dog.

After the law the dog is taken into custody by the animal control and either put down or relocated to a rescue out ofthe county or city limits.

the owner is usually fined!

if a city has banned pitbulls, then owners may be able to pay a fine or fee or higher home insurance to own the dog. otherwise, they are surrendered to the humane society and either found new homes where they are not banned or put to sleep.

it's sad, but too many people are using and abusing these kinds of dogs.

Either the people who own them have to move to where they are not banned, or, they will have their dogs taken away and the poor dogs would be euthanized. BSL is not a pretty subject and it creates broken homes. Punish the deed, not the breed.

Sometimes that means that you have to pay a higher homeowner's insurance too. Sometimes it means that it is harder to get homeowner's insurance as well. The previous answer was great too. Some cities or communities try to ban them. They have just gotten a bad reputation with bad owners, but they aren't being put to sleep just because they are that breed.

Yes, you can, and they are trying to get rid of that law. It's not the dog's fault that so many people are using them for sport.
I hated the fact that after all of the bad press, the dogs got the bad rap.

Scads of irresponsible people breed pits. Shelters are full of them and no one really ever adopts them so they are killed.
