This is my first time having a yard sale and I would like some hints on what I should do or don't do? Should I price things right off the bat or should I let them ask me??? I want to sell everything????

In our area both Fridays and Saturdays are good. There are a lot of retired people that prefer to yard sale on Friday and they are the early birds on Saturday. We've had 2 yard sales over the 8 yrs. we've been in our house and we started putting stuff out and getting set up at 7:00 a.m. to be ready at 8. Both times for both days of the weekend we had people there before we were finished setting up! Definately price things right away but just remember that a lot of people like to negotiate so you may want to price things just a bit higher than what you expect to get. That way you give the impression of giving the customer a discount and they leave thinking they got a great deal! Both parties are happy. If there are some items that you're not sure what to price them at then you could have a "make an offer" section. Don't be afraid to take a little less than what you wanted because the point is to get rid of stuff and the more you get rid of the less you have to haul off to the thrift store. Good luck and have fun with it!

Lots of people begin their yard sales on Thursdays and Fridays, and then continue through the weekend. The only advantage of a weekend is that more people who work are at home. There is no hard and fast rule. Most of the sales I've been to, have the prices already marked. You might even team up with another family and have a joint sale, or a multiple-family sale. In order to keep things separate and organized, you might use different colored labels for each family. A good rule of thumb in pricing is to rate each item at one-eighth it's original cost. For example, an item you paid a hundred dollars for would only be $12 at a yard sale. It's better to have the items priced ahead of time, as people will always try to buy them at a reduced price of much less than they are worth. Of course, if you really need to get rid of the things, you have to be flexible and be willing to negotiate the price at any reasonable offer. Yard sales don't often net a great deal of money, so if you have a truly valuable item or items, it might be best to sell them through a newspaper ad, or an auction. Children's clothing and toys seem to draw the most customers, followed by tools, household goods, and miscellaneous items. Be sure all electrical appliances are in good working order, and that clothing is clean and not torn or stained. Display your items in an attractive manner. Good luck!

I have had many, many garage sales. Once you have one, you'll continue having them. They are fun and you make money.

Fridays and Saturdays are both great days. Can you not have a two day sale? That would be best.

Price everything. I hate going to a sale and not knowing the price. Most times I won't even ask the price and will just forget it so mark things. How to know what to price things at? If you know what you want for an item, mark it that price and write "Firm" by the price. Otherwise, mark it for what you would be willing to pay for the item at a garage sale. If someone asks you if you'll take less, barter some with them.

Good luck....

All the good stuff is gone by Saturday because of the people who are true yard salers. They get that paper and look on Thursday nights and are ready to go bright and early on Friday morning. Hang on to reasonable prices until early afternoon on Saturday. In our area Sunday's are not good for yard sales. We have quite a lot of church goers and to most people Sunday is a day for family not yard sales. You can try to put out what you have left from the weekend but don't expect much on a Sunday. You will meet people that will give you a lump some of cash at the end of your sale. If you have no intention of ever using your things again, sell it cheap and let them remove it so you don't have to repack etc...
Good Luck, I go with my neighbor every once in a while, she is a true yard saler and really gets some great stuff..even free things to resell that are worth some money. Take all this stuff into consideration and you should do great!! Good Luck

More people are off on a Sat, so you'll get more turnout.

I recommend you put an asking price on everything as nothing frustrates me more than to go to a yard sale and have to ask the prices of EVERY item I'm interested in (I'll often just leave as it's too much hassle if the sale is busy).

Remember though, people expect to get something for nothing so don't be unreasonable with your prices, and stick firm on them early in the day but later on if you are wanting to get rid of everything, come down on the prices so the items that are left will sell.

Get everything ready on Friday, like prices and what you're planning on selling. Saturday is the most perfect day. Get up extra early and put signs out around your area. There are people that actually drive around looking for yard sales believe it or not. And if you don't sell everything on Saturday, continue your sale on Sunday. Good luck!!

I think on Friday and Saturday are both good days.

On Fridays, all the stay at home moms like to get out of the house and get an early start. I remember as a child going with my grandmother on Fridays.

Saturday is a good day as well because most people are off work and get out of the house. My sister and I use to go on Saturdays to find old lamps and restore them like new with some new paint or jewels...

Just pick a beautiful weekend and enjoy the extra money!

Depending on where you live. I believe Saturday is best. Yes price things right off the bat and have them marked with tape.
You can always go down on the price if you choose to do so.

Start on friday and continue on Saturday, price everything first, or you could always group things by price and then just label the table or box $1.00 or whatever the price is that you want. Good Luck!

Saturdays. If the items are big in size or if the item is really valuable, price it off right away. When interest is shown for that item, you can negotiate. Small items I wouldn't worry about pricing right away. You just don't want to have a price tag on EVERYTHING. Sometimes it draws the customers away.
