I just asked for some feedback on helping a person close to me in regards to how to approach her on the subject. With the replies that I have been given, I wonder now, why it is entirely up to the person to help themselves...the help is needed in other areas. What areas would you consider to be helpful?

Since we can't cut fast food restaurants out we can put the heat on them to provide us with quality good food instead of junk fast food. Rarely do I enjoy eating at these establishments when the menu calls for french fries as a side order.

I think advertisers have done enough already - they're the institutions who have hands-down contributed the most to anorexia and bulemia. Their ads show super-thin, waif-like people and for some reason think we should adopt that as the standard of beauty. It would be 10x better if they showed someone who was lean, yet muscular - someone who didn't look like their shot heroin everyday.
As far as corporate America is concerned, they are making SO much money off the unhealthy habits of their own citizens, it's crazy. The fast food giants are making money hand over fist...and in order to keep mass producing cheap, unhealthy food by substandard measures, guess who their bedfellows are? Wait for it....yeah. Government lobbyists who pay the lawmakers to look the other way on nutritional content, quality of the food, low payment standards for farmers and the means to produce it.
I would not look to these two arenas any time soon to assist with addressing the obesity rates.

I'm not trying to be rude, but how did you come to question why it's up to the individual to do better by their own health? Who else's responsibility would it be? Friends and family (who happen to be the only people I'd consider helpful) can only do so much...at the end of the day, it's the person's responsibility to make the effort.

It is true that each person is responsible for themselves, but I do think that Corporate America can help fight against the obesity epidemic.

At the end of the day they pay a large amount in Health Insurance bills for their employees.

They also lose business and revenue due to sick or ill employees.

There are many business the thrive on peoples desire to be fit and well.

As the say Charity Begins at home.

They can start at with their employees. Encouraging them to walk or run for causes they believe in. Having a gym facility in the office. Really I think it is a win win situation. I think healthy citizens are better for Corporate America and our society as a whole

okay as far as helping your friend its all about knowing her and what she capable of. What does she like and how can you incorporate it into a exercise routine for you and her. Can you adjust your life to get her out on walks. Can you incorporate activities based on her likes and dislikes. If she like animals etc, dog parks etc. Can you gossip with her while doing these act ivies to keep her mind of the act ivies themselves. Can you give her a hobby that way if she looses a friend or someone in her life she can fall back on that hobby. As far as corporate America and advertisers it depends on what they are advertising and their target audience. Yes the can if their target audience buys it. Example paint ball and video games what easier and funner. Also wouldn't it be cool to chase someone down and turn them into a chicken. It all depends on how you view something and what your likes are.

Advertisers and corporate America will do nothing to help the problem. They are the ones who cause and support obesity. If they had it their way, we'd all be obese... except for them of course.
