Since when is mumbling some kind of spiritual language?...give me a break...I think it is more a reaction to the over use of hairspray if you ask me from looking at these rubes.

The gift of tongues that was talked about in the New Testament was clearly an earthly language. The gift of tongues was the gift were a person that did not understand the person with the gift of tongues language could understand him. If I had the gift of tongues and all I speak is english and I went to China and God wanted me to speak the gospel to chinese people then as I would speak they would understand what I was saying. Did I some how start to speak Chinese? I doubt thats what would happen. I believe that as I spoke english the Holy Spirit would translate it to the hearer supernaturally so that they would understand. EWhat you saw on TV and probably anywhere else is demonic or just nonsense. We don't need the gift of tongues any more because the Bible is in basically every major language.

I think some people who speak in tongues may be genuine, but most are not (IMO).

A definite TV fraud is Tilton. I woke up at three in the morning one time, and he was on the television. He was talking in tongues. After a few seconds into it, he said "Minihaha". Directly after the word escaped his lips, a look crossed his face. It looked as if he realized what he said, and then tried to suppress his own laughter. (Minnehaha is a character in a Longfellow poem called 'Hiawatha'.)

I'm a Christian. But there are frauds and posers everywhere.

It is an interesting thing. When running a brain activity scan on a person speaking in tounges, apparently the language centers are not active, or as active as when someone actually speaks.

Ok, I am glad someone posted this question again. Why don't you ask your SCIENTIFIC friends what it really is. They have studied it, and so have many doctors. It is a fact, and It is a language, a Heavenly Language, between that person and God directly. It is not for anyone else to understand. It is not just mumbling and you should do your research and you wouldn't look so .................well uneducated. Google" talking in tongues "and see what you get!

you apparantly don't believe the Word of God.
it is all through the NT.
it is how we obey the resurrection of Jesus Christ .... the infilling of the Spirit w/ the evidence of speaking in other tongues as God gives you the ability. (acts 2:4, 2:38, 1 cor 12, 14)

Jesus even described about being baptized in the Spirit b/c He knew people didn't understand it. as you don't.
however, just b/c you don't believe it, doesn't mean it's not true.

the apostle paul said, to "forbid NOT to speak w/ tongues." (1 cor 14:39)

he also said, "I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all" (1 cor 14:18)

unbelievers & false christians are those who don't want to accept it. if you don't believe speaking in tongues is true, then you can't believe the bible is true.

w/o the infilling of God's Spirit, your body won't change from mortal to immortal to meet Jesus in the clouds at His return.
in other words, you won't go to heaven.
so, if you don't believe, it's your choice & your loss.

" the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. "
(1 cor 2:14)

Speaking in Tongues comes from a misinterpretation of several Bible passages. It is done by Charismatic Christians. Linguists have analyzed the utterances and can find no structure in it. It is truly just babel. The Bible makes several references to speaking in tongues, or more succinctly speaking in another language. But the idea is that you can spread the words of Jesus to those who do not understand your tongue because your utterances will be heard in the receivers tongue. This gift of tongues that allows you to be understood by those that do not speak your tongue is bestowed upon those who witness for the Christian faith. How can you possibly spread the words of Jesus if you can not be understood. I view it as "window dressing" to prove that you are truly an anointed one and are above those who neither speak nor understand these untranslatable utterances. I see this sort of thing as a business ploy by those who are taking monetary advantage of the truly faithful Christians, by shaming them into believing they are not as worthy as those who can "speak in tongues". Verily I say unto thee, it is babel and thy babelings will keep thy pockets overflowing with earthly riches. So sayeth me.

What you're seeing is the "climax" of a session of mental masturbation disguised as religion. Speaking in tongues is done mainly by fundamentalists who are extremely repressed and that this is how they let it out - it's gotta come out somehow.
For these groups, speaking in tongues is a more acceptable means (socially and religiously), of releasing that sexual tension. They wouldn't CALL it that, but that's what it is.
