Like when there is a prophetic word in Church, or if someone is giving a testimony, or if someone speaks in tongues in Church?

I, II, III John does talk about testing the spirits to see if they
are of God. You learn by experience and by confirmation.
It's alright to put something on the "shelf" in your mind
until confirmation is received. Sometimes we can be too
nagative and sometimes too optimistic about it!
Confirmation in three's (in different times/places) is a
recognized thing (that I experienced).
Over time things can be revealed - the "friut" determines
the "tree". Experience is perhaps the best teacher on
this one. You get to know what God "sounds" like - much
different than your own voice or someone else's.
If you have any question, question it sincerely!
Sometimes our apprehensions are personal fears
and sometimes they are warnings that are waranted.
God let's us know for sure especially depending on
how important something is for us!

99% of the time you may just discount any "tongues". most such manifestations are just self induced hystaria..If the experience does not strictly follow the guidlines set forth by God then it is not genuine... there are genuine manifestations through speaking in tongues but they are very rare, VERY... and... the last Prophet of God to mankind was John The Baptist... so... if any one claims a prophetic revelation of any "new" word from God you can ignore it...

Testimonies are to be personal witness of what God has done in the lives of the individual... that experienc is between God and the individual. A testimony should only be given to lift up or encourage others of The Faith or to witness to one who is honestly seeking God's Word and Will for their lives... NOT to be put on as a drama piece for the self inflating of the ego of the testifyer

If an act or experience can be fully justified by The Word and Will of God... Through the personal understanding of the individual and within the preserved Word as revealed to the individual... then it is from God(The Holy Spirit)... if it can not be justified by The Word of God then it is not of God but of man... and likely a deception of the forces of evil.

A Christian has to check those things against the complete revelation of God ... as it was always understood, interpreted, and taught, by his authentic and universal church ... from the earliest days ... and that even predates the bible.

If it doesn't fit ... then it's obviously a pile of ... dung.

Tongues excepted. Nobody but God (hopefully) can understand typical tongue speech.

This is why good, complete theology is so important for Christians.

Otherwise, it's very easy to be deceived.

Is the word inharmony with the Bible in Tradition in the Church?
How about the discernment of the utterance of others who are tried "prophets" and 'discerners"?
Are the criteria of St Paul in 1 Cor put into practice?

A prophetic word will come to pass and biblical.
Tongues in the church should have an interpreter.

That is one of the biggest problems with Christianity.

There are thousands of denominations, all started by people who felt the the holy spirit was bearing witness to a new truth for them.

They then ran with the new doctrine and formed new churches based around them.

Why would the Holy Spirit bear witness to differing doctrines?

If you claim that people were deceived by the devil, then you are claiming that they were open to deception, and beyond the protection of God, even though they lived their lives searching for God's will, and were willing to tear up families and friendships in the name of conviction.

The fact is that the HS is really just human emotion, and when people are taught that their emotions are really all powerful deities, they tend to do incredibly harmful and hurtful things to others.

The first test is does it go with the word of God. Is it backed up biblicaly. That is why you should read and know the word yourself and not depend on others. There are lots of well known preachers on TV who do not go by sound biblical teaching. If you don't know it you can get lead astray easily. The next thing to do is ask god what he thinks about it.

Usually, for me at least, when something is said that is true, I get a warm feeling in my chest, and usually get teary eyed.

We don't speak in tongues in our church, unless you are talking about the Spanish speaking people that are in our ward. The will give their testimonies sometimes in Spanish. That's kinda neat to hear. We also have a few Tongan, and Polynesian families. It's always neat to hear them talk in their native language.

*EDIT*
It is said in John 14: 26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

And in D&C 11:13 Verily, verily, I say unto you, I will impart unto you of my Spirit, which shall enlighten your mind, which shall fill your soul with joy;
14 And then shall ye know, or by this shall you know, all things whatsoever you desire of me, which are pertaining unto things of righteousness, in faith believing in me that you shall receive.

Burning in the bosom.

I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right.
But if it be not right you shall have no such feelings, but you shall have a stupor of thought that shall cause you to forget the thing which is wrong;

Doctrine & Covenants 9: 8
8 But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right.

It's true. :-)
