Additional Information: I always search the Wiki first for ALL of my questions. I never take a medication without looking it up here first.
Please see the following Wiki article.

At the bottom see: Causes and Risk Factors

Emotional or mental abuse will not cause a learning disability. However, it can cause a personality disorder. A personality disorder occurs when a person adopts a pattern of behavior to survive an intolerable environment. The behavior pattern allows them to survive the abuse, but is not compatible with the rest of the world.
Please see this article in the Wiki.

Personality disorder - Wikipedia
Personality disorders are generally self destructive to the person that has developed the behavior and they often injure the people around this person. People with personality disorders often have learning disabilities or some type of mental illness, but not always. Although a PD and LD frequently occur together they are entirely different things and have different treatments. Just because a person has a learning disability, it does not at all mean that they have a personality disorder. Please, never try to diagnose yourself or others in this area. The differences can often be subtle and should be left to a trained expert.

The term learning disability is extremely general. In todays society the term rarely has use outside the following context.

A teacher speaks to a parent and says, "Your child is having difficulty keeping up with the other children in the class. I think that he/she may have a learning disability, but I am not an expert. John/Jane needs to be evaluated by a psychologist/ psychiatrist/ child study team."

Speculation and concern should be followed immediately by an evaluation and a diagnosis. In the past knowledge was lacking and answers were often vague or wrong. Today correct answers can be found from interviews, cognitive testing and SPECT brain imaging.

When the specialist arrives at a diagnosis the cause of the disorder can often be determined.

For example: AD/HD is either inherited genetically or it results from head trauma. A SPECT brain scan sees each of these differently and is used to determine which one is the actual cause.

Knowing the cause of a disorder can be important to parents and the person who suffers from it, but what really matters is the future and what can be done so that the person can be as successful as possible in life.

One more item. Pediatricians are not qualified to diagnose learning disabilities. They are generalists. They often make mistakes and overstep their knowledge. Only listen to a trained specialist.

Also, it is very common for adults to have undiagnosed learning disabilities. Very often treatment in the form of medication and/or therapy will result in greatly improved functioning at work and in personal relationships. If a person is willing to spent the time and effort the rewards are often great.

It can be inherited, so they are born with it. IT can also be caused by something that happens to them, like brain trauma or a severe reaction to vaccinations or heavy metals in their environment over a long period of time.
My son had seizures in reaction to his vaccines, and we feel that his learning disabilities and issues were at least related to those seizures. The tendency for the disability was there, and in time it might have developed to some degree on it's own, but the vaccines and subsequent seizures were a part of it. I feel that it was a combination of those and maybe other enviromental factors that caused his disability.

Possibly yes. I would contact a lawyer. There are a lot of lawyers who work on these types of cases, and they don't expect any type of payment unless they win your case. Trust me, letting a law firm do this for you is so much easier than trying to do it on your own. Trust me, I know how you feel. So don't let people tell you its not debilitating. I have anxiety, suffer panic attacks and have ADD. Doesn't make life very easy. Good luck to you!! :D
