i have a 4 month old poodle puppy.
he is very very active. he goes for a run in the dog park every day for an hour but he still wants to run more.
i can feel his ribs and hip bones etc. vet says nothing to worry about until he is losing weight. he is not losing weight which is good.
i heard though that cat food is not good food for dog as it's too high in protein. but would that not be good for my puppy now? so he gets some protein to put on muscle weight?
please just let me know if it's ok. if not what can i give him to make him put on more weight?!
thanks

Cats require twice the protein and only a small portion of Vitamin A in comparison to dog foods, so stick with the dog foods. Too rich a food with a puppy could result in diarhea.

If your vet says his weight is fine leave it alone. Most dogs and cats are overweight. I know how you feel, I have a doxie that is skinny and people comment all the time. I have asked 3 vets about her weight and they all said the same thing, leave it alone. She is also very active, and can feel the ribs.
I also don't free feed her and she gets a specif amount of food for the day, She always gobbles it like she is starved but to get her overweight is so much more unhealthy. Don't give your dog the cat food as it could cause medical problems down the way. Be glad your pup is on the slim side it is so much healthier for them.

They make puppy food for this reason (Purina Puppy chow for example). Same reason why they make kitten food for young cats. So they can get the nutrition they need. Can dog food can help in this. I wouldn't suggest the dog eating cat food even though it won't hurt it.

Cat food can make a dog go bald. Cat food is not good for dogs. Ask your vet what is good dog food for him. Do not give him cat food.

I would feed him more meals a day with canned dog food and always keep dry food handy for him, cat food is not good for dogs.

he won't get the proper nutrients if he only gets cat food. if you want him to put on weight feed him puppy food, which is high in calories.
