Ok, I have a puppy who is 6 1/2 weeks old. I've had him since he was 4 weeks cause the mother wouldn't feed him or his siblings. I've been crate training him: he stays in the crate while I'm working, he's out when I'm home. I take him out as soon as I wake up in the morning. He stays in the crate at night time cause I woke up one morning to 6 poop piles. I take him outside when I come home for lunch at noon, and I take him outside for at least 1 hour when I come home for the night. Whenever he pottys on the floor he goes back into the crate, but he's still going on the floor! Any tips would be helpful and let me remind you I don't like the idea of "cages" but I've had no choice in this matter. I didnt have to use it with my first dog I still have. He isn't kept in the cage all day, just between morning and noon and then 1 and 4:30 then he gets taken out several times while I'm home. After he poops outside, 5 min. later he'll do it in the house. I'm lost on what to do!

And when I say take out I mean I take him outside, it doesn't mean I let him out of his cage then put him back in it cause when I bring him back inside the house he gets to roam around.

according to the first answer "i'm not taking him out enough" I take him outside every 15-20 minutes. just like I stated the problem is not me taking him out. you need to get your facts straight before you try and make 2 pts.

i am not going to use those puppy training pads cause all they do is teach them to go on the floor! All answers have made me realize that yes he is too young to train yet, so I'll just keep up with what I'm doing. P.S.- It is not cruel to keep a puppy contained while no one is in the house. It insures his own safety so he doesn't get into something that's potentially harmful, and it keeps him from pottying on the floor.

He's too young to have mastered the art of housetraining. You're doing everything right, maybe keep him in his crate when you can't supervise. Puppies poop about 10 minutes after eating, playing, sleeping. After any of those activities, take him to his designated poop spot. Be consistent, and keep doing what you're doing - just realise you have at least another 6 weeks of this.
Also, he can probably only hold his bowels for a couple of hours right not - a guideline is your dog's age in months + 1: so your 1.5 month old dog can **only be expected** to hold it for 2-3 hours at most.

I think he is a little too young to be left in a crate for so many hours right now. He's like a baby and they require constant care. Pups should go outside to potty about every half hour. The have to go when they are running around playing, within 10 minutes of eating or drinking and they certainly can not go the whole night without going. Remember, they have smaller parts than your big dog. Try paper training him. Wee wee pads are available at lots of pet stores. You can confine him to the room....kitchen for example with the wee wee pad. You will of course have to teach him to use the wee wee pad. Right after he eats, put him on the pad. When he wakes from a nap, put him on the pad. Don't clean up immediately after he goes, leave it there for a little bit so he gets the idea. Punishing a dog that young will only make him ill-behaved and not fun to be around. The crate idea is that it is a safe haven for him, not a place to go when he's puhished.

Well, I had a dog when I was growing up, we got her as a 10 week old pup in 1990, I was 17. She was a mutt, half black lab, half springer spaniel. I remember that it was my fathers idea to take a soda can and put a couple quarters in it and put tape on the top. If the dog did a no no in the house, either 1 or 2, I would kinda hold her head to it and shake the can real loud in her ear. I know that sounds cruel and it kinda is. But it only took a couple of times of doing that, and lots of dog walking, before she realized that going to the bathroom in the house was a no no and meant the can in the ear.

Just be patient and consistent. 7 weeks is still very very young to hold a tiny bladder. I would continue to take him out every couple of hours when you can and at night at least once a night. It may take a few more months to be fully potty trained. My Doberman was about 5 months untill fully trained. Continue to praise him when he does the correct thing but don't scold him for not.

Set a schedule for feeding & time to go out. Make it a consistent schedule & keep your dog on it no matter what.
Meanwhile, don't let your dog out of your sight for a second. You are the responsible party here, set your dog up for success by not allowing him to make mistakes. Leash him to you if you have to, but keep your eye on him. Crate him when you aren't home. Feed him according to the schedule, and take him out according to your schedule. If he tries to eliminate in the house while leashed to you then you can quickly move him outside & praise him for going to the bathroom outside.
After sticking to the schedule for a few weeks you should beging to see improvement, but only if you remain consistent in your training. It takes longer for some dogs, but maybe yours will surprise you by picking it up faster. Once he is on a schedule he'll go when you take him out.
This kind of training completely depends on you, your patience, and your consistency. You can't ask a dog to do something you haven't trained it to do.

Only crate the puppy while you are now not residence for a dog not than a million-two hours for an grownup puppy not than 4 hours. until at night time) You must additionally create a time table for the puppy. You cannot house-break a pup that age. They would still be with the mom and she would probably still be cleaning up after them.
Take the pup to the vet and bring a fecal sample. Parasites and coccidia can make the pup have to poop more than normal, but at this age they poop A LOT!!!!!!!!
Wait a couple of weeks before trying to house break. He just isn't mature enough yet!!

he is only 6 1/2 weeks old. He has no control over his bowels. He cant even hold it for long-- you aren't taking him out enough if you want to get him to stop going in the house completely.

He is too young to control. You just have to continue keep the schedule up. Once he is older enough, everything should be fine.
