We just bought a 2000 Volvo S40. It has about 47K miles and appears to be in good shape. We hadn't actually been looking at Volvos, but the price was low given the make and mileage. Looking it over, I could see no significant problems with the car.

I have experience with other Volvo models and, while their were problems, those experiences have been pretty good. Can we expect the same from this car?

What experiences have you had with S40's.

Is there any known problem with S40's we should watch for?

This is the fifth volvo in my family, and the second one I have personally owned, and all have been good cars. My last Volvo was an old 240, it had 85K miles when I bought it; we drove for 5 years and another 100K+ miles before it became too expensive to maintain.

The "huge" repair bills you mention have never been an issue. In my experience, I have paid just as much for repairs for Fords, Toyotas, and several other makes I have owned over the years.

any car brand when it is maintained properly, the chances of having a problem is very slim considering the normal wear of a certain part that requires repair or replacement but, when you own a volvo you are ahead of the other car user when it comes to safety & that is because of the many safety features of volvo cars.

DEPENDS ON HOW WELL IS WAS MAINTAINED AND WHO AND HOW IT WAS DRIVEN.

OVERALL IT IS A NICE AND SAFE VEHICLE.

THE REPAIR SIDE AND MAINTENANCE WILL BE VERY EXPENSIVE.

Expect H-U-G-E repair bills.
Why do you people ask smart question AFTER a dumb move had been accomplished?
