You will have as many different responses by individuals as you will have responses.
Most people choose criminal justice because they want to make their communities a better place, help others who need help...and my favorite...

Criminal Justice is an academic field as well as job field that is never dull. Secondly, if naturally you like helping people and have patience and great communication skills, whether as a police officer, probation/parole officer, child protective services worker, etc. a criminal justice degree is one possible degree for you. If you want a job to where you're not sitting on a desk all day, and you get to move around constantly and talk to different kinds of people, criminal justice is a good field to enter. The money isn't as good as some other fields, but the field is definitely one of the more interesting and exciting ones.
Many people will say CJ is too easy. That's not always true. My program, for example, includes a criminal law course that requires critical thinking and applying legal logic, not just learning definitions. Also included is statistics and a research methods class. Several classes are "writing intensive" where you do a lot of reading and a lot writing, especially research papers. Depending on the program, a CJ degree will give you a lot of valuable skills in getting a job.

There are few careers, like law enforcement or criminal justice, that offer job stability and unique interactions with people on a regular basis. I mean you can go into sales and the interactions are always similar, but in Law Enforcement or criminal justice the circumstance are usually different. Of course there are negative occurances but there are also many positive ones. Its also possible to change around in law enforcement and criminal justice like you would not believe. I worked my way through college as a police officer, did private security for individuals a few years and made good money, and then ended up with the law degree.

I chose criminal justice because the job market is very demanding, 9 times out of 10 you will find a job out there when you graduate. Not every job pays well in the criminal justice field but with a degree you can excel and promote quickly to a higher management position. In addition, criminal justice degrees are highly compared to Sociology degree because they both touch basis and provide emphasis on deviance and behavior. Just because you get this degree does not mean you have to be a cop or an CO . There is a wide spectrum of jobs you can release out into such as Social work, child services, public health, counseling, and consulting. The list goes on and on......

Although I was very interested in the criminal justicise as was my nephew a decade later. My father was strongly against the idea.
He was the Assistant Police Chief in a major metropolitan city. After retiring from that city he became the Chief of Police in another major metropolitan city.
He did not want any of his children (four girls, two boys) to go into law enforcement because he had to deal with the worst of humanity and the respect for police officers has all by disappeared in the U.S.

What about being a criminal lawyer. I have a few family members that are criminal lawyers. The job certainly pays good. Also us can put people in jail a safer way then being a police officer. I would recommend a career in criminal law.
