My partner is beginning the fun process of becoming a DEA agent. She'll be going to training, etc., but I was wondering how they choose your location once you are done. She thinks they give you an open choice of 3 states and they try to put you in one of those three. I can't imagine it's that easy, otherwise everyone would be in states like Hawaii and California. Anyone have any idea how they choose?

Oh, she has an MS in International Relations and a BS in Criminal Justice, and would prefer to go to a New England state as we both have aging parents there.

The term is "dream sheet." You can put down what you want but not necessarily get what you ask for.

Working for the government means you go where they need you the most.

The DEA does attempt to place you based upon your area of request.

The 16-week Basic Agent Training program is held at the DEA Training Academy in Quantico, VA. During the 8th and 12th week of training the individual is assigned a final duty station. Mobility is a condition of employment and transfers are at the discretion of the DEA. The decision is based on where the agents are most needed. Personal requests are not taken into account.

You can find more information at www.dea.gov.

Your superiors decide where you are needed most based on your skill set. There is some flexibility because I have a person I know that has a homebase place he lives with his wife and they do take requests into account as well. Sounds exciting but the stress is very high.
