Each child develops at different rates so to give an exact age is probably not accurate. Generally speaking when they are old enough to color or feed themselves, they MAY show a favoritism toward using one hand or the other. It isn't until they get into writing and cutting with scissors (ages 4-6) that it will become apparent which hand they prefer to use.

As with any developmental process there is a wide variation between individuals. Many children settle into a particular hand around the age of 3. Then on the other hand, I met a new student who uses both hands equally. He is 5 years old and in Kindergarten. There are some indications of developmental delays- speech, attention span, drawing skills, etc - that place him at about the 3 year old level. Not to worry though if the child in question is ahead or behind the curve unless there are other pervasive indicators of delays.

3-4 years old

The Pediatrician Answers:
It is generally possible to tell the handedness (whether he or she is a "rightie" or a "leftie") of a child by about the age of 3-4 years. Younger children will often experiment with using both hands.

We suspected that our son (now 4) was left handed when he was about 6-8 months old. He would grab things more with the left hand then right...and low and behold....he is left handed.
It was very obvious when he would pick up his fork/spoon with the left hand and crayons with the left.

Probably not until 2-3 years. That's when a child can grasp a crayon or pencil properly.

my kids used both their hands early on in life, so it's hard to tell until they are around 3/4 years old.

Great question!
My son uses both equally, still, and he's 2 1/2. I'm not sure when I'll know which one he is.

It depends on how old you were when the child was born; then add 3 or 4 years.
