Assuming the next of kin wants it, you can serve as the funeral escort and accompany the mortal remains all the way to the burial site. It is considered to be temporary duty and you return to your duty station, ship or post upon completion of that duty.

We have our own funeral services here in Iraq or Afghanistan for our fallen brethern when that happens. We cannot go home to their home service but we can ask to be one of the soldier to carry them on to the plane. This is not allowed because this soldier will probably have lots of friends in the unit so to determine if who goes would be difficult. I believe the only time a soldier is allowed to go home for another one is if the deceased one is a family member. But to avoid this as much as possible we always watch out for all our fellow soldiers everyday!
