Fast food, crazy, hectic lifestyle, processed foods. I am from the US but live in Mexico right now and I notice a huge difference! First of all in the US there is fast food EVERYWHERE and it is very easy to get to. Where I live, there is a McDonald's a ways down the street and the streets are so complicated here that by the time you figure out how to get in there you're so frustrated that you don't even want it anymore and go home and make a decent meal! In the US people eat in their cars and it is totally normal. Here, most people get a 2 hour lunch from 2-4pm--some towns actually shut down during those hours! So there is time to eat a bigger meal, digest it, and relax a bit. People stare at you if you eat in your car! It is stuff like that that makes the US such a great place to get fat!

well that is hard to say, I think one thing they did was lower the numbers on the charts that made normal weights all of a sudden overweight overnight, you know skewing the numbers. also I think we just notice it more because of their harping on it all the time, before we probably only noticed people who were very heavy or stood out.
but now we notice even slight excess weight (which years ago we would of ingnored.) on people and it makes it seem like an epidemic when in fact it is not.by the way people are also gettting taller which accounts for some of the weight gain overall.
the only ones getting fatter are those already in the obese category as a whole because their bodies are just not working right for some reason.
people who are healthy (even tho overweight) who used to not think about it are getting obsessed by it, over the years many of my friends who are just right complain of being fat and needing to diet. they see themselves as fat when in fact they are not, it is the newsmedia and medical community that must take the blame for this.

Because crap is EVERYWHERE!! In the supermarkets, all the pre-packaged stuff of with hydrogenated oil (CRAP), all the fast food (CRAP,) doughnuts, hotdogs, fried foods, Etc, Etc. It's all crap! Just read some labels! There should only be two to three ingredients, but there's a lot of stuff you can't even pronounce!! All kinds of food coloring and preservatives. All of the white flour found in cakes and pastries.
In other countries, they cook veggies and rice and beans, and don't stuff themselves. We're so overweight because of all the crap that's available everywhere. Just check out the labels next time you're in a supermarket.
Don't even get me started on buffets!! We're supposed to live to eat, not visa versa. Portions are too big, and exercise is too little! :(

shooting-star, why does Scotland having a high obesity rate surprise you? This is the country that invented the deep fried mars bar.
Anyhoo the U.S.A has more obese folk because they have fast food outlets (don't deserve to be called restraunts) everywhere you look. Also the portions are alway massive over there and everything is topped off with processed cheese slices.

Because we have more fast food joints who all serve way too much for way too cheap. We have a ton of desk jobs. We don't face weight problems when they first start. We are never happy with what we have. This is America achieve more, get more, buy more......more....more...more!!!!
So we get more fat.
I am one of the obese americans working towards loosing weight. I have joined a gym, have tons of equipment and videos at home. Have a workout buddy and eating right.
Fast food should all go out of business if you ask me. They are slowly killing us a $1 at a time.

In the past, when people first started going to America, it was seen as the land of opportunity.
This has led to people having more than they ever had before, and in turn that has led to greed. Not just in food, but in every aspect of life.
Americans feel that they need to have everything bigger and better than everyone else.
Hence, you see their big cars, big houses, big office blocks....and in restaurants you get big portions.
People have become used to eating, big style. And combine this with the need to drive their big cars and you have a sedentary lifestyle.
It all adds up to obesity.

Probably because of places like McDonalds being easy, cheap, and convenient. However, I think that fat label has been blown all out of proportion. While I do see a number of people I would consider "fat", I see many more "normal-sized" people.
